Near miss with a trail runner

This morning I hit T100 around 8am. I was heading NW on 8 or one of it's feeders, just south of T100, when I came up behind a lady trail running. She had headphones on, but noticed I was approaching, so she stepped off the trail and let me by. Just after passing her, the trail dropped into a shallow wash. The sun was casting all kinds of shadows in the wash. Lots of dark and bright patches. I saw the pattern of a rattlesnake just as my front tire rolled over it. The snake never moved. I stopped about 10 feet past it and turned around to make sure it was actually a snake and that the lady didn't step on it. Just then, the lady started down into the wash. I yelled "stop", there's a "snake". She looked at me but kept going. I don't know if she couldn't hear me because of the headphones, but finally I held up my hand and said "STOP". She stopped about 2 steps from the snake. When she did, it started to buzz and looked really agitated. Probably from being run over by a mtb. Anyway, it slowly slithered off the trail.

I'm usually pretty good at spotting snakes on the trail, but the light/dark patches on the ground from the sun really camouflaged it well.

Good job on saving the runner!

I've personally never seen a snake out on the trails in my 8 years living in Phoenix until this year, so far I have seen 3 rattlers. Guess it's a good year for snakes.
