    National Trail

Does anybody get the feeling that some Mountain Bikers that can climb National, and Bomb down it...think they're some elite group of bad asses. I can do it, and I weigh 260 lbs. I'm no super hero.

It's pretty tough to pedal all the way up, maybe not elite, but it's still pretty tough. Or did you mean, can you ride/push your bike up the hill and ride back down?

    Because "bombing" is also subjective.

Does anybody get the feeling that some mountain bikers that can HAB/wheez their way up National and then crash at least 3 times while taking 50 minutes to walk/ride down it...think they're some elite group of bad asses? I can do it and I weigh 230 lbs. and I sometimes ride with my weiner hanging out. I'm no super hero.

Pshhhhh, 260 is nothing! I've seen people on The Biggest Loser ride bikes. You've got nothing on them.

It is tough to clean everything pedaling up. I wouldn't call it elite though. In fact, the level of it that I can regularly clean is a pretty good indicator it's not anywhere near elite I can only think of one bigger dude I've seen pedaling up National so maybe that was you. I do find that impressive, is all that weight in you quads??

if they can bomb down & ride "UP" the Waterfall, then yeah, they are super hero badasses, & so are you. otherwise, no. just regular joes.

11 years ago when I was in shape I could clean the national going up, and down, without a stop (to Beuna Vista), on a hardtail XC “racebike” with a 63mm SID.
At the time I knew it was nothing special, looking back I think that it was commendable,
I’m totally out of shape now, and need a breather at the top of the fire road before the single track ever begins, and no way in heck I could clean it now… and I would need several stops.

So, to anyone that can clean that trail, non-stop… my hat is off to you, in my opinion you are bad ass, and you should be proud.

And now (possibly then too, but I was not into the internets) there are folks running it on fixed gear rigid bikes... insane...

    So,
Whether it is bad ass or not is realitive.
For folks in shape that can run the trail, no biggie for them I suspect, but for folks like me, whom the ride is unobtainable, yes, bad asses each and every one of 'em.

Hats off to anyone willing to challenge themselves on National, whether you're an elite racer or ordinary Joe, wheezing and pushing your bike up the hill. Think of all the dedicated couch potatoes, that are going to be wheezing away on oxyxgen, at the nursing home because they never got off their ass to get into half way decent shape!
