    Is my rear deraillur broken?

Went riding at 6 am today up by Spur Cross Ranch and on the way back I inadvertently hit the long cage of my rear derailleur on a big rock with the bottom derailleur pulley getting tangled up in one of my spokes. After untangling it and making sure that the derailleur is not bent I went on my own merry way. However when I started shifting to the middle gears all it did was slip and felt loose with the pedal. I am able to use the lateral gears without any problem i.e. gears 1-2 and 6-9. By the way I hit the rock while I was using the middle gear. The derailleur looks perfectly fine with visual examination.

Does this mean I need to get a new derailleur?
    Thanks!

my guess is that you may have a bent hanger if you put the derailleur into the spokes.
    Honestly... ahh I give up

The Yeti hangers are extremely soft. It's likely bent. That's good and bad news.

    Hanger is bent, not derailleur.
