Very morbid but I'm on my lunch break so why not. Being that the next drinking holiday is Halloween (if you don't count every Friday, Saturday and Sunday til then) I'm going to say Oct 31st at 8:35 PM.

BTW-It's running now to make sure it works properly and will be in 'real' use come Dec. 27th.

Dude. Feb 18 is not only my brother's birthday, he was born around 3:30. I'll make sure he stays away from PHX around that time.

What I heard was they started it up last week for some test runs, but it doesn't open to regular schedules until Dec 27, with the 27th and 28th being free and the 29th the first day of having to show a ticket.

Are they predicting his death? Since 9/28/08 isn't for another week. Anyway, I guess you win.

I'm not "predicting" his death since he died 2 years ago.

I'm replying to the OP and saying he is the "first fatality caused by the Light Rail" since he crashed his police motorcycle into debris from the construction of Light Rail.

Kinda fitting that the pic next to the article has some woman running in front of the train eh?

I'll say the second week. First week people will be careful, but they'll be bored of waiting for it to pass by week 2. "Nah, it takes forever to get here after the lights go on, we can make it!"

Moped-riding man runs into light rail crossing arm
    by Clarissa Dodge - Oct. 6, 2008 12:30 PM
    The Arizona Republic

A man on a moped ran into an activated Metro Light Rail system crossing arm as it was being tested at about 1 a.m. Monday, according to Tempe police.

The man was going eastbound on University Drive when he failed to stop at the arm that was in the down position with flashing lights, according to police.

The man fell off the motorcycle and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol is considered to be a factor and the incident is still under investigation, police said.

A spokeswoman with Metro advises people to obey all traffic signals, use crosswalks properly and stay off the tracks.

"We have been working diligently to share safety tips with the Valley," Hillary Fosse, a spokeswoman with the Metro Light Rail, said.

Testing on the light rail and equipment will continue extensively throughout November and December, Foose said.

Metro is expected to open at the end of December.

Light rail trains to test during Oct. 25 football game

METRO light rail vehicles will be running during Saturday’s Sun Devil football game against the University of Oregon; so please proceed with caution. Trains will run before, during and after the game in an effort to build familiarity among event goers.

So while you’re enjoying the camaraderie and excitement of ASU football, please take note of these key light rail safety tips to keep you, your friends you’re your family safe throughout this year’s football season and beyond:

Light rail is quiet; look and listen for the train.

Obey the traffic signals; stop on red.

Use the crosswalks and obey all signals.

Stay off of the trackway; never drive, bike, walk or skateboard on the tracks.

Soon enough, METRO light rail will serve as your personal curbside valet to these games with their grand opening on Dec. 27!

Anyone willing to predict where it will happen? I suspect it will be along Central Ave, between McDowell and Roosevelt. I see people all over those tracks when ever I am in that area. More so than other parts of town with the tracks...........

I say it will unfortunatley happen by March 2009 on that stretch of track.

It'll happen at 7:30 am February 2nd, and the victim will be one of us commuters in this forum. The bike paths along Washingtin are crazy smooth and fast, but they force you to cross the rails at least a couple of times! Unless its a drunk ASU student this weekend.

?Does it count if the death results from a mugging as a passenger is riding from Tempe to Phoenix through the ghetto?

Either Way, I say the first death, whether mechanical or social cause will happen on 3/6/09.

I heard on the news today that a 74 year old woman ran a red light on Washington and was pegged by a train. Even though she was fine I immediately thought about this thread. I also thought about how we need to take away the driving licenses of old people. That is, until I am old.

I live a block from the light rail, so I've seen them testing it up and down Central Avenue. It is slooooooooow. Anyone who gets hit and killed by that thing is just natural selection working.

That said, my prediction for the death pool: 4/6/09 3pm (Dbacks home opener at Chase Field)

ha I too almsot imediately though of this thread when I heard of the old lady. Working on Main & Dobson and seeing the "lightning fast" speed of this thing Crispy is right - natural selection.

We have a bet in office now that headed to the airport one person can leave from here by car the other by light rail. The person going by car can be at the airport, buy a ticket and half way through security before the other even gets to the airport.

My prediction is the Macyo's Depot Cantina in Tempe the 1st Friday night of operation. Who the "F" thought it would be a good idea to run a train right past a bar, in the path patrons need to go to get to their car? Oh wait no one drive drunk - this may save lives.

Looks like light rail had it's first collision on Tuesday the 30th....rather, someone had a collision with the train. Hit and run.....no injury. Story here

This is number 2. An old lady ran a red light during testing and smacked it a few weeksw back. I am still not betting on the first death. That is just wrong.

Doesn't that make it biking content for this forum.
