Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead! Labor Day Weekend @ Sunrise

The lift will only be open for Sat & Sun.
Who is going for the final lifts of the season?
Maybe over to Candy for Monday Labor Day runs?
Not to be jacking Steve-O's thread, but the title seemed a little misleading.
Lets get a bunch of peeps up to Sunrizzle and show the man how much we support the hill and lift accessed riding in AZ.

    Roll Call.
Now I DRIVE the short bus!!

I think we're planning a day trip on saturday if anyone wants to carpool/caravan. Wish I could get up for the whole weekend, but I think the lady would have my walnuts if I took another bike trip without her...

    To Dog owners...

    Yo guys-

I'll be in for coming up Friday night and staying thru the weekend with perhaps a Monday departure. I have two dogs that will accompany me; is that a big deal? I had heard that the Candy Mountain trails dump right into the campsite, so no problem managing the dogs when I'm riding there. When I'm over at Sunrise riding the lifts, I figured that I could check on them between runs if I leave 'em in the van @ the parking lot. Sound reasonable?

Yeah, that usually isn't a problem. Lots of people bring their canine companions to Sunrise. Some even take them on the lift. Most leave them in their cars or tied to the bumper. A few bring kennels and leave them in there. I guess it depends on your dog's disposition. It is cooler at the hill so leaving them in the car with the windows cracked doesn't pose much of a risk of heat exposure for your furry friends.

Stu...still up in the air. Sat. would be preferred for me. Brett, your pups will be fine in the car. Wish I could get up there all weekend. There's some fun xc trails too! I'll show you my map later. I'm getting stoked about this weekend, but I think that it might partially be because it's the last one sunrise is open and we can get back to worrying about which hill to ride and who's the next shuttle ***** instead of complaining about how lazy and crappy sunrise's operators are. The weekend after next, real AZ DH season begins!!!

My brother and I will be there. I just jumped on Trek's sess fr closeout (3k) and put a mar 888 rc2 wc on her. Looking forward to having a spring under me bum -- been downhilling all summer on my Banshee hardtail (even used it for the first day of practice at Nats this year -- though opted for a rental dh rig after that). It might be like learning to ride all over again!

Is Candy the same as Green's?

And what does latedrop mean that the dh season really starts after this weekend?

I meant that we don't have to rely on some silly little lifts to get some sick DH action. Oh and it's only gonna get cooler and we can shred for long hours on any hill we want! If you wanna get in on some shuttles hit me up and I'll keep you in the loop. sherlock you in the old pueblo or up in Phoenix? We got big plans for this fall, more candy, mingus, flag, hopefully some Tuscon action and lots of globe runs. Plus we can actually ride Somo when it's not a hundred and skin blistering degrees!

I teach on the Navajo rez in Chinle. My brother lives in Scottsdale. He rides Somo lots and I get there a couple times a month once winter sets in. Our father lives in Alpine so Sunrise is real handy (get to see the old bleeder and do some nice rides all in the same trip). Definitely up for sharing shuttles so please let me know, thanks.

The best run in the rain is probably fungus because it is all splashy and cool. Once the rain stops it is all about sticks and stones super tacky.

I got a full truck filled with shredders ready to rock on saturday!!! Me, ABC, Gref and a newb gonna make the morning commute. Anyone wanna caravan? Leaving Tempe 545ish... Make a stop for a muffin download and some slots at the casino on the way up? Some el Rancho on the way back? Hopefully I'll have to actually use my rain jacket this summer...

Super tacky is way different than wet. Fungus for the soaked runs and S&S for later when the still water is mainly gone and the soil becomes a sponge instead of mud. That is the best of the best condition wise, super sticky and lots of give. You are supposed to jump over most of the logs and rocks anyways.

Great pic though, have you seen any of my wipeouts? Once Brent gets his grand summer finale put together I am sure that a small crash vid could be made with just me - at Sunrise.

Best ever is Posh crashing and immeadiatly being landed on by Terry off of the hipper. Too bad the footage didn't turn out, it was a goood one.

DG, the rain storms up there don't last very long usually and they make the trails SO much fun.
You will have a ton of fun, trust me!

Something about maching down Sticks N Stones in the wet, with mud and roost shooting from your tires...that's what dreams are made of.

Oh, you had the upscale Y-bike! Mine was the red 22. Still a carbon frame but lower end components. Got upgraded over the years of course as stuff broke/wore out. Unfortunately just can't compete with the modern long travel rigs so it sits in the garage as a fond reminder of trails and adventures past!

Bring your camping gear just in case you change your mind once you are up there. The rain usually occurs in the early afternoon and clears out by middday. That should give you and the pups a chance to dry out before hitting the tent.

That would be normally true if this was a normal monsoon, but with all the moisture remenants from the hurricane, there will be a lot more moisure in the air and it could rain all day or for longer periods than a normal monsoon cell. The latest forcast from NOAA is 60% on Sat and 50% on Sunday. I was planning on going up, but now staying in town to enjoy a clound covered desert ride.

Yep, looks like the system went over mainland mexico vs the predicted baja. Our high pressure is gonna snag that moisture.

my old man and i are heading up too. up friday night from tucson down monday moring. for both of us it will be our first time up, and down hillin in general. well, we have hit lemmon a quite a bit.
how difficult are the trails? any that we should definitely avoid or hit?
we both have full face helmets (giro remedy), but no body armor. will we be ok?
also, looking for any advice in general, like what to expect, do, maybe riding tips.
    thanks for any help.

crashing bad, look at some of the older sunrise threads and I'm sure you get all the answers you're looking for. Sunrise is all fun, the more pads the better and the more suspension the better, but you will have fun!!!

Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. West southwest wind between 4 and 7 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Yippee!!!! I am packing with rain in mind, bringing the monster pop-up, wet-dog towels, and lots of beer. We'll be at the Sunrise campground with an old silver 4Runner and a white VW campervan if anyone wants to stop by to share the misery. Will be looking for someone to lead us to Candy if the lifts get closed Sat/Sun!

This is reminding me of Durango last Labor Day weekend:

The new jump/hip that was built by James and crew, is at the end of slippery rock. Chutes is still closed to my knowledge.

    Sunrise report

Saturday - I just followed A.P.B. Andy, LnC, and Scotty down the trails doing whatever they did. The new DHR ate it up. That bike likes to jump and this girl is getting more used to air time. Surfing the raging river down Nemisis was a hoot!

Sat night - thanks to NoBrakes Erich for putting us up at his Pinetop chalet. Drying gear by the fire and a having a dry place to sack out was a great alternative to camping in the pouring rain up at Sunrise

Sunday - 5 great runs on what I imagine were the most primo trail conditions of the year. Super tacky, beautiful blue sky, but too bad those big poofy clouds turned into rain around 3ish.

I didn't get any riding pics but here are a few others from the weekend. Can't wait till next year!!

Too bad you didn't get over to Candy to sample the goods over there. I'm sure you'll make it up sometime. Good thing is Candy is open anytime (or at least until the snow starts flying).
Good to hear you had a good time at Sunrise however.
The ShortBus will be running next Sunday 6:30am at SoMo if you need another gravity fix.
Now I DRIVE the short bus!!
