Before they had BMX bikes I ripped the fenders off my moms Schwinn Breeze and ripped trails with it. It did the job.

My first "big kid" bike was a 20" Schwinn Fair Lady in purple in 1975. Yep a girls bike. Money was pretty tight then, but my dad got it for free and it was nearly new. We quickly modded it "On Any Sunday" style with cruiser bars, solo seat and a number plate while removing the fenders, apes, and banana seat. I rode that bike for a year until Dad was satisfied that buying me a new bike was a good idea. Rode it in on trails new the house and made jumps and tracks in the Albany Oregon woods. All before "clunkers" came out. In fact, I only got this bike because I broke the cheapo 16 inch wheeled bikes fork off at the crown jumping through a pothole- 16 stitches in the chin and I still have the scar 38 years later! Here is a stock Fair Lady-mine was exactly like that when Dad brought it home.

There's too much religion and smug with rigid single speeders as it is. Adding in the "pride" of riding a crappy bike will make it critical mass.
