    If You Like Hawes...

...check this out. This is a proposed master trail plan drawn up by the Hawes Trail Alliance, in cooperation with the Forest Service (Tonto branch). This would be AMAZING, and would open up all sorts of possibilities, including a venue for some events.

HTA is working with the Forest Service to get the current social trails adopted, and plan for new trails. The Forest Service is launching a “fast-tracked” (my term) NEPA study, and believes that it can be completed within a year.

See the HTA Facebook or Instagram pages for more info, and also check out the “Closed or not” thread on here for some more info/context.

Pics from meeting on Tues night:

And here is some feedback that I provided after the meeting, on some possible additions/changes to the plan:

Looks awesome. Hopefully this gets lots of support. When you have a land manager interested in working toward better trails you have to take advantage!

This is really impressive. Thanks for all your hard work and thanks to all the others helping to improve the area.

I've been riding the Hawes area since about 2003. It's where I essentially learned how to mountain bike. The area has always been fantastic but Hawes proper has always just felt a little bit confined. Opening up the land to the east with more than one single trail (which has already happened) tremendously improves the ride quality and possibilities of the area. I am seriously stoked to see where this leads.

Yeah, Dale, I think the HTA would be keenly interested in any input and advice you might have, based on all your background with this, and knowledge of Hawes. But what potential for additional, close-to-PHX "epic" riding!

Hopefully this will not all be boring buffed XC trails and get some more extend downhill runs with some technical chunk.

Most of that is intended to be that "Enduro" area, to the W/SW of the NRA Pit. There were some enduro/DH racers at the meeting that expressed their desires. The Forest Service is reticent about it; however, for liability concerns. The group felt that those concerns can be addressed. There is huge potential for runs in that area, off those big slopes.

Here is the trail map that was presented at the meeting:

Proposed additions are in orange, existing 'social trails' that are up for adoption to the official network are orange w/ black dashes.

I don't know the history of the collaboration, but I was very impressed that the Bend area trail coalition folks were able to work with the forest service to build The Lair freeride area. It's really impressive. See this old article below.

The current builders and people doing the advocacy are a far more interesting topic. Kudos to all who selflessly give their time and labor so that trails continue to exist at Hawes and other areas.

Hawes Trail Alliance received a $10,000 donation yesterday from Maricopa County and the City of Mesa as a result of a recent land sale in NE Mesa, where it was stipulated that a portion of the proceeds would go towards outdoor recreation. This will be going directly to the aforementioned trail improvement activities.

One of the Tonto Rangers in attendance at the meeting is primarily a hiker and was doing most of the interaction during the meeting. She said she had never been mountain biking, but was open to giving it a try. So, on Saturday, I lent her my hardtail and a few of us gave her an intro to riding the area. We did a short loop on the new stuff: Scorpion, Stinger & some Wild Horse. It may have only been 6 miles, but she is now getting a more complete view of the type of trail(s) we mtbr's desire. It was a win-win for all of us.

There are no big slopes in Phoenix.

Even though I hate Hawes, I always like to see new trails being built in cooperation with the city. Win-win for our sport.

Checked out Hawes last week when I was down in the valley. Place seems fun. Need to try again with a better idea of how to get around as I am sure my choices of trails and direction could be improved. Seems like an area with alot of potential.
