    Hiker's Revenge...

Rode up the back side of Sunrise tonight. Stopped at the summit for some refreshments to relish my cliimbing accomplishments before dropping the seat, laying the pads on thick and starting my descent down the front side of the mountain. At 5PM on a Sunday hiker's tend to be a rarity so I figured I'd be able to save some brake pad and get some speed. One by one I (very slowly and politely mind you) came across hiker after hiker, conveying a welcoming hello only to receive an even distribution of dirty looks, mass confusion, and reciprocated warmth. Finally I came across the large group and slowed right down to one who exclaimed, 'You look pretty series, rocking all the pads!'...Naturally I took this as an opportunity to pop off the next rock and try to catch a little air as I progressed past the group and SLAM! Not sure exactly what happened except that what would normally be a non-issue progression from air to light tech resulted in my bars getting yanked to the side and me having my first, and certainly more public endo of 2012. During the crash I managed to successfully split my elbow open THROUGH my 661 2x4s, wrecked most of the skin on my upper arm and nearly cracked my new lid. Hell bent on looking like it was just routine mountain biking I smiled, dusted myself off and carried on like it was no big deal sharing a wave as I departed.

So here is my question, why is it that one's skill immediately drops to zero the minute he is presented with an audience? Well I guess in my case the answer is simple; I'm just no Tiger Woods...errrr...pre-2009 anyway. Hiker's revenge.

This may sound callous, but how's the bike?
Please donate to IMBA or your local IMBA chapter. It's trail karma.

A camera will decrease the skill level by a factor of 4 (minimum!)

Not at all! That was the first thing I did when I got out of eye shot before assessing my elbow under the pad. The bike looks great except I beat up my levers cosmetically but that was just a matter of time.

A group of hot chicks with cameras...forget it. You're falling over even if you're not riding

Couldn't agree more. Combine that with an audience and I then delete the footage. I had one heck of a demoralizing ride at Goat Camp, on camera. I blame the camera.

I rode Thunderbird Park about a month ago. When I got to the top, I was feeling pretty good. Two hot blonde mountain mommies passed me going the other way as I was riding at the top of the hill. I said "Good morning, Ladies" to them and smiled... As soon as they passed me, I looked behind me to check them out. As soon as I looked back in the direction I was riding, I ended up hitting a rock or something, causing me to wipe out and skin up my right shin pretty good. Nobody saw it happen except me. I couldn't help but just sit there and laugh at myself. I wiped off the bloody dirt, munched on a Cliff bar, drank some water and headed back down the same way I came up. About halfway down, those same two ladies stopped and moved to the side to let me pass by. I stopped and told them what I did and we all had a pretty good laugh. I wished them a good hike and rode on my way.

Crashes are OK as long as injuries don't require a Helicopter, but don't ever let a hiker see you walking your bike...ever!!!!!

Stopped trailside to let pass a couple of hot chicks on horseback and managed to fall over while just standing there.
