    Gila River Ramble

Hello out there. Heading down from Durango to do a couple days of rambling on the Gila River route. Does anyone know the best way to cross the Gila when the river is too high to ford? there is a dam to the west of the route and a railroad trestle bridge to the east. does anyone know if it is crossable at the dam?

    Thanks!

The Gila is running very high right now, 500 CFS. I don't think you can get across at the dam in high times. If you continue a couple miles west on Price rd, then shoot south & connect with Diversion Dam rd. There's a gauging station at China Wash that has a foot bridge and auto crossing of the diverted Gila waters. Head back towards Area52 along the south side of the river. Check my latest blog post 'Queen's Ransom', as we used this crossing coming from Area52 on our way into Florence.
