    Forest Service roads in winter

Just got my first MTB. Iím in the Happy Jack area, so surrounded by forest service roads. Are there any restrictions re: riding these roads during the winter?

Shouldn't be. I'd only be concerned about the sticky peanut butter mud those roads tend to turn into when wet. That and the miles of embedded lava rock. There are some good ones up there, hopefully you can find a suitable route.

What part of Happy Jack? Some of the roads are locked by FS for the winter, so avoid those. A lot of the roads are crushed granite based, so MTB doesnít bother them too much.

    Have fun!

Honestly if I came across a gated forest service road in the winter time up there I wouldn't think twice about hiking or biking on it. I don't live up there but in my experience the gates are closed when the snow gets heavy and they don't want to deal with people getting stuck in their vehicles.

That being said, I probably would have no interest in riding a forest service road covered in 12 inches of snow either.
