    Controversy - Forum Needs Activity

Here are some of what I think may be contoversial or highly debated positions I have:

    1. Singlespeeds - I just don't get it. No, I have not tried it, but so what. It seems to me that it is a great way to train to be in either a too big or too little gear for the conditions. How does this increase one's ability to ride faster? Most of the time you are in the wrong gear for the conditions, and thus unable to maximize training.

    2. Socks - Look, I am not Mr. Fashion Plate, but I just don't get why I see too many people wearing very long thick 1970's basketball socks. People, get some cycling socks or forever look like a nerdy.

    3. XC v. Freeride/Downhill - I don't get why XC and Freeride/Downhill are lumped together as one sport. To me the difference between XC and FR/DH is greater than the difference between dirt and road cycling, yet this is a dirt webcite. Same with the magazines. For example, MBUK seems very devoted to hucksters. I am not into road riding, but I would rather read a road magazine than MBUK. Why don't we add BMX to the mix, after all, that is in the dirt too? If you don't ride up, its a different sport. Not that I don't think FR/DH is cool or totally fun., its a different sport.

    4. Just Ride - Again, I don't get this. It seems too many people critisize others for not riding, or being this or that. Look, I am not a weight weenie, but if your idea of fun is building a superlightweight sub 26 pound bike on a heavy trail frame, yahoo. If you never ride your rig, but get off taking 10 grams off the weight, yahoo. Riding is just one way to enjoy bikes. Now, this position may seem contrary to the XC v. FR/DH position I took above. Well, maybe. First, life is hypocritical (an ancient Chinese proverb). More importantly, the weight weenie movement is not taking over the magazines I like.

I hope this generates some activity in this forum. It has been painfully slow lately. If I upset someone, ok, I will get over it.

    Gearing

I think folks are recovering from Globe and gearing-up for Granite and I'm steaming cuz I couldn't/can't make either. On an unrelated note I'm hoping to do the Pig's night ride tonight but if the wife is still sick I'm plannin on a Thu T100, 1A, 8 ride

What does this have to do with AZ?

It doesn't, but here are some responses:

    1. Singlespeeds - You have not tried it, so you don't have a clue as to what you are missing. Singlespeed are in the RIGHT gear 100% of the time.

    2. Socks - Wear what you want, show you own style, and stop being critical of others.

    3. XC v. Freeride/Downhill - You are right, people that don't ride up are doing a different sport than those that do. Friends don't let friends shuttle.

    4. Just Ride - What's not to get? If you got a bike, just ride the freakin' thing. Bicycling is about the riding, not the bike itself.

You wanted controversy. I don't think I like you.

Its ironic how I am criticized for being critical of others, yet you state you don't think you like me. That's pretty critical. It is also ironic how you say as to the socks -wear what you want, but as to the just ride part, bikes are about riding, implying that its not ok to like bikes and not ride. Its ok to wear any socks you like but its not ok to just not ride? I am fine with people that like bikes and don't ride, but those damn socks. Man, I don't like those damn big socks. My point is that the "Just Ride Movement" is somewhat aloof. st.

Maybe you don't like me and maybe if we ever meet, I may not like you, I don't know, but you won't earn points with me if you wear big ugly socks, unless they are really cool retro Micahel Cooper Laker socks.

    To each their own.

    1) Single speeders? I dont get it either but, hey, they do, even when the right gear means walking.

    2) Socks? Who gives a poop, I guess you do.

    3) Freeriding is like "Hermaphroditic porn, the best of both worlds. Hey, I like to expand my horizons." I ride my 36 lbs 6inch travel steed up and down mountains and I try to stay in one gear as much as possible.

Friends let friends shuttle because its FUN! And shuttlers will cheer a SS climber having fun as they pass him/her in the shuttle, I saw that up in Globe several times this past weekend.

    4) Punch Doggies! And punch them often on whaterver gear ratio you ride in, ride however you like, and ride in whatever socks you like. Just don't wear Pinocchio undershorts.

OMG BOOOORING. Oh God, the controversy!

    3. XC v. Freeride/Downhill - I don't get why XC and Freeride/Downhill are lumped together as one sport.
Irrelevent to an AZ board (like the rest of your questions) but, if you've spent more than a couple years following mountain biking, you'll realize there's a strong convergence between XC and FR/DH at the same time as they appear to be diverging. Media is pushing the divergence through xtreem videos, but all that's really doing is raising the bar for "normal" XC riders to push their skills and equipment.

Maybe if you got out and rode more, and spent less time yapping about how you're not being entertained by a bunch of strangers online, you'd be aware of all this.

    4. Just Ride - Again, I don't get this. It seems too many people critisize others for not riding, or being this or that.
    Unbelievably boring question.

It's been slow because the most active posters here are out riding in the beautiful weather, assaulting enormous mountains, racing, pushing their skills, and living life. Maybe what you're looking for is the pasty-out-of-shape-bicycle-collector forum.

I've heard there's porn on the Internet. That might entertain you for a while.

    boring

maybe you should go back to "complaining" about the heat. That was entertaining.

Singlespeeds, socks, XC vs Freeride/DH and Just Ride are all old, boring topics.

Yea, and topics such as Thanks _________ for the Shuttle, Thanks ______ for the __________, Moving to Arizona, Swapmeet 101, Dead Bodies on the Trail, What's the Weather Like in the Middle of the Desert, blah, blah, blah are all just so much fun right?

I have never seen a "I hate sock" post before, so it may be boring, but I need proof that it is old. Maybe it is, I just have not seen it.

    Upset Entertain Me!

Waah! I'm bored! Entertain me! You owe me entertaining content! Waah!

Dude...most of us get our entertainment from, uh, riding our bikes. The board is just a communication medium for that purpose.

If you're feeling left out, seriously, I strongly recommend you try riding your bike with other people here. Outside. In the real world. I'm sure many/most of us would be happy to hook up for a ride. I know cliques, and I guarantee you there's a minimum of cliquishness going down on the AZ board.

The Globe event was open to anyone who wanted to show up. It was free. You could have met about 50 new people there on either or both days. And then you, too, could participate in the "Thanks" posts.

Or you can sit there like a 2 year old and demand that we dance for you.

If you don't make it abundantly clear very soon that you're not just a troll, our general goodwill toward new people is going to go sour very quickly.

First its the weather police and now its the boring patrol. Boring - so what? Irrelevant - so what? Don't read and don't respond if you don't like it.

I ride plenty, but that is not the real issue.

Convergence between XC and FR/DH - that's boring. I don't know what I need to be aware of, I made my point.

I like porn. In fact, if I could, that is what I would do all day, no riding, nothing else. Problem is my body can't keep up with my desires.

Now can someone please tell me how to disect a post into sections in a reply. I can reply to the whole post, but not in piecemeal. I hope my question doesn't bore anyone.

    If you don't like it/him....

.....just ignore it/him. Nothing sez "go play in traffic" like a no responses post. Please don't turn this into the "Old Passion".

Playing flame wars makes us all loosers, but highly entertained loosers. Loosers who ride bikes! Loosers who have way too much fun!

I for one was not offended by Dirdir's topic, I found it humorous, nobody could be that out of touch I hope. But I guess I am a looser.

I am no troll, although I am not sure I really know what that is. As for the Globe event, I knew about it, would have loved to go, but did not, and in no am criticizing it or the participants. That was not my point, ever. But somehow that is how my posts have been interpreted.

If you guys think my posts are boring, and are so compelled to bash me on them, which is what you have done, then perhaps I should not participate here. Look at my post. I bashed no one person in particular, and basically complained about socks. Some guy who wears big socks saw it and his brain blew (sarcasm here). Boring is subjective and is no reason to hassle me. I did not hassle you.

The purpose of this board is communication and entertainment ABOUT bikes whether one rides alot, alittle or even none. It is not just a supplement or aid for riding bikes. Do you really want to ban everyone who participates here if they don't ride enough according to certain standards? Even so, we simply disagree. Again, I don't need to be bashed simply because we disagree.

Your post implies that I am sitting here whining about needing entertainment and that I am like a two year old demanding that you dance for me. Not true. No such things were ever said in my posts. Its a big stretch to come up with that from my posts, and again, no matter what I said, no personal attacks were made by me. I was attacked. I simply wanted to make some points, but I guess I can't do that if they are boring to some people.

Go back to my weather post. I complained about the weather (again, a stretch, but I will concede the complaint issue) and was attacked. It was just some stupid comment about the heat. Big deal. No basis for attacks.

It seems like if certain people find out you don't ride enough, or at all, then that person better be careful. That was one of my points. Ok, confession, I really don't ride at all, I just love bikes. Should I now disappear? (someone is going to use this last question against me).

Now with that, we can all choose to be friends, which is what I would like.

and he made you do all the work!

Seems to me that Dirdir was just trying to get some activity on the board. I don't blame him - I wish the New Mexico board had some discourse and conversation going on. You sure rose to the bait, but look at all the free entertainment you guys provided.

And the sock thing was funny, IMO. I used to be a roadie, and there were these 2 guys in town who were total wannabees. They rode their road bikes in ARGYLE socks! Those preppie-lookin things with big colored diamond patterns. Every time I saw them I couldn't stop laughing

Yes, if you don't ride, you should stop posting. I don't wish to be bothered on a Biking in AZ Board with someone who doesn't bike in AZ.

Why would someone like bikes if they don't ride them? The things I like I use: bikes, women, alcohol, guns, etc.

How often do you see me shifting on my geared bike? (The real reason I enjoy it is the simplicity of not having to shift [although breaking a chain the last time I was on it was no fun either].)

As far as socks, if I could, I'd never wear them.

DHing, FRing, XCing. What are these?

Just ride? Easy for you to say, you have a sweet bike that looks good on the trail, as well as in the work stand :-)

If you don't ride bikes you can't like bikes.
If you don't ride bikes in AZ, get the hell out of this forum.

I just don't agree. Maybe you once rode bikes, maybe in AZ. Maybe you are just so smart you can appreciate bikes without riding them. Would you be bothered if the non-riding, non-zony had great and insightful things to say?

I don't want to get you into trouble by being associated with me. First, deny you know me. Next, go to China on a long trip. By that time, all the heat I have taken and that has potentially been transfered to any one I associate with will be gone and we can get on with our lives.

Funny, I just spent the last monthing looking for argyle socks (see my note below, but those are the only socks I actually enjoy wearing--but not on a bike). No body carries them (well J Crew does), but my gut is they are going to make a return. You watch. I picked up two sweet pair.

But will anyway. I think posting for the express purpose of getting replies is a very significant purpose of posting. I get what you are saying and what a Troll is though. I did not want to really upset anyone, thats for sure, but controversy was my stated point and I did say I will get over it if I did upset someone, but I did not think I really would.

I can give you my life story, but won't. Lets just say that I am an introvert and spent much of my time in high school pretending to be Adam Reith. I concede that I tend to say too much in emails, but I blame my parents for this.

    Catch-22

i think when someone writes a post saying it is controversial and is looking for board activity, it nullifies the troll moniker.

however, you guys that responded without humor, DID in fact take troll bait. some of you just cannot take a joke.

this has been entertaining, indeed. thank you dirdir. maybe we will meet on T100 sometime. or not.

    XC vs FR/DH

While I care little about most of your post, there is one topic that I couldn't agree more with.

I agree with you Dirdir, FR and XC do not belong in the same sport. XC has gone so far away from the roots of mt. biking towards "roadyism" it is disgusting. Look at the Marin pioneers, shuttle ridin', downhillin', steel toe work boot wearin' machines. Pedal up? Sh!t! Do you think that these guys invisioned heart-rate monitor wearin', lycra sportin', cadence contemplatin', obsticle avoidin' freaks as what their sport would become? Hell, no! Do you think they would invision a sport wear power, courage and daring win out, as opposed to the best roadie in the woods. Yes!
XC riders you are not Mt. bikers! You are an abomination in the eyes of the MTB Gods!

    Hey Now Fecal-matter...

Just kidding but here's a true story for you...

I had been riding for less than a year (XC stuff) and really starting to dig it but I was completely new to the sport - didn't even realize that a Huffy sucked yet. I wasn't riding one either - but I digress...

The most enjoyable part of riding to me was learning how to "clean" something and improving to the point where I could clean something I couldn't previously. This is STILL my favorite part of the sport but I digress...

Then one day I see that OLN was going to show an actual MTB race! I thought WOW! I've never seen one of these! Maybe I can see how pitiful my riding really is compared to these folks that are World Class. Well I start watching this race and they are hauling ass and I realize how much I really suck. Then they come to this tech section and jump off the bikes and start running with them! I had never ever seen anyone do this and I couldn't believe my eyes. I realized after the shock wore off that it probably was the "fastest" way to get through this section with the least risk for carnage but my stomach wrenched at the thought of NOT riding through that section! I honestly thought there would be some sort of penalty for getting off the bike. I had no clue...

and to this day I can't imagine doing this...(until I get to the lower waterfall on National and somehow I'm off the bike ) but hey, I'm not racing anyone...

... and if we just ... Need Advice on Layer Between Shoes and Feet

I am investigating getting some sort of layer between my shoes and feet to protect against foot blisters and sores when riding. Does anyone do this? They need to fit my feet, size 11, must be breathable but soft, cost about $10 or so, and most importantly, they can't slow me down. I just ride, maybe once or twice, mostly a good mix of jumping off large buildings and really fast motor pacing. I am considering ordering some of these below, but am not sure. Any help?

    ...I had no idea!!!!

Thanks for this informative post and bringing me into the sock loop.

I broke it to my Grandmother (who buys all my underwear and socks) that I no longer want her to get me the High-Top socks that she gives me each Christmas and Birthday.

Grandmother is not very happy about this hoopla. She even gave me the "Well then I suppose if all your buddies rode off a cliff, you follow them right off!" guilt trip, but I think she will warm up to "footies" by my birthday.

In the meantime, cut me some slack about my knee-highs….and my funny tan.
