    AZ MTBR Bike/Part Swap - 11/9/2008 11am - 3pm

A few months ago Chongoman and I were chatting after a ride and we came to the conclusion that we have a lot of bike junk just sitting around doing nothing. Turns out I had a wheelset he could use...turns out lots of our MTBing friends had stuff others could use...and an idea was born.

I have the small ramada reserved at South Mountain on 11/9 from 11-3. If you have stuff you want to trade, come on by, set up a table, and see if anyone is interested. There will be beverages, but beverages of the adult kind have to be brought in only by me since I bought the beer permit. (So if you want to BYOB, PM me and you can arrange getting it to me beforehand. I swear I will bring all of it with me. Promise.)

I'm going to try and get a keg of something tasty...that is still TBD.

Nothing is official...no fees, or money-making to pay for promotional costs or permits or anything like that. Just a free event for a bunch of MTBers to get together and trade old parts and share a few cold ones after everyones morning ride. Even if you have nothing to trade, come on by, and put some names with screen-names. Fun to be had by all.

    -JB

    Edit to add directions:

    Directions:
Take Central Ave. south from Baseline Rd. into South Mountain Park. Continue on into the park and turn right on W Las Ramadas Dr. Follow the signs to the “Small Ramada”.

Paul will sticky this in a few weeks, so as long as you all don't get over your MTBR addictions before then, it should be front and center for the few weeks leading up to it.

    2 rules to remember

Just want to remind everyone of 2 rules that would get you in trouble there-

No glass bottles- big nono there, beer in cans or kegs

No selling- Its called a swap, I know, but selling anything could get you into trouble, so just a reminder.

I wanted to remind everyone so nobody has any reason drag us through the mud with parks department since bikers seem to be a marked group.

Sounds like fun, I'll try to make it.

JB, MTBR's posting guidelines clearly state that spamming is prohibited. I expected more from you. Really. This is very disappointing, and almost certainly grounds for banning.

Of course I'll be stickying this (probably second week of October), and man do I have a mess o' stuff to try and move. If it takes off, we'll totally make this an annual event.

Great Idea! Who really needs a reason to party? But bike parts, beer and chatting with good peeps...even better! So we will be there...Unless Jeff's brother & fiance in Lake Placid decide to get married that weekend.

I'll be in Moab but making this a annual if not more often, would be great.

    Good call.

I should note...this is somewhat of an experiment. There is room for 80-ish people at the small ramada, and there is "lots" of parking, but I have no idea how many will actually show up. So, everything may not go over perfectly, so I'd ask everyone to be cool and let us figure out any weird logistics on the fly...that way we can learn and do it better next time.

i plan on coming just to buy junk for cheap. Not sure what I need, but i will know it when i see it. I'd bring my road bike to sell, but I doubt this is the scene to sell a $1000 16lb road bike.

The keg is ordered, got the Pale Ale from Sonoran Brewery.

However, it's not too late to change that order, if I hear enough noise for the IPA...

    Sweet. I'm in.

With the C2C2C, PEE, FOTP, and Ironman AZ (volunteering), I will be in the lovely city of Phoenix four times in November (lovely=I only use that term of endearment about Phoenix during fall-spring).

HAHAHAHA!!!! AWESOME! I'm down. Def want to help out with the keg funding... I hate feeling like a freeloader with stuff like this. Sounds like a blast. Bring some folding chairs to sit in and hang out...

I don't have anything worth trading - but I'd happily make some appointments or post-swapmeet, off-grounds purchases!

And I'm sure it's worth reminding again...

A couple of thoughts as we near the swap:

-PM me if you want to bring your own brew and coordinate with me to bring it in for you. Don't want to violate the terms of the beer permit. (I have to be the one to bring it all in)

-Keep an eye on your stuff while you're out there. The MTB community at large (for the most part) is very cool and that's one of the things that keeps me riding. But unfortunately, seems like at every race at least one bike turns up missing...

-Create a list of stuff you may want to trade, and print it out. That way you're better prepared to remember what you want to trade and what it's worth to you. (Or not)

-Remember this is a trial run. We could run out of room, parking, beer, it could rain or all of the above. Worst case, it may totally suck. However, whatever happens will be a learning experience for next time. So be cool and enjoy the day. (Also, if anything sucks, it is PaulB's fault. Somehow.)

-The road up and Holbert down would be a great pre-swap ride.

-I will be drunk, so don't expect me to be useful for anything. (Just kidding. Well maybe not.)

Rear Brake Needed - MTBR Parts Swap Meet

Anyone have a spare rear disk brake they'd be willing to part with? I think I busted mine yesterday after a wreck. I run mechanical Avid BB7 disks and looks like I may have hit the swing arm thingy on the brake that connects to the cable. Only tinkered with it a little bit as I was running out of daylight but there is extremely noticable scrubbage against the disk now. Could be a bent disk I guess too but just eyeballing it wasn't noticably wobbly.

Anyways, just thought I'd throw this out there since the swap meet is coming up to see if anyone might be able to help me out. Or if anyone has a decent front and rear cause I doubt many people have just a rear brake. Looking to get a "new" bike in the next year so I'd rather not dump much more money into my current ride. Thanks

I think you should be able to get a great deal on avid mechanicals as many of us started with mechanicals and have swapped them out for hydraulics. I have a pair I'll be bringing...

Thanks for the replies Fisher 'n DG. I can probably gather up a few dead Presidents on green paper . I don't have a whole lot else as I've not been riding for too long. Probably only other thing I have of value would be one of those homemade PVC bike racks that could be used for the back of pickup or just for standing bikes in garage.

That beer was really good! I got home and drank a Miller Light and almost died.

That was a good group of people there . . . I didn't know anyone but it was still fun.

Well I wished I had been able to make it... Didn't realize it was on Sunday, thought it was yesterday and when I realized it would be the next day instead, I knew I was going to miss it. Hope all had a great time!

    Cool-blue Rhythm

Enjoyable few hours and it looked like some weather was rolling in as I was leaving. Nice to put a few names to faces and some day down the road maybe ride with a few also.

Fun times!!! I bought and sold and donated and traded all sorts of stuff and had a good ol time. Thanks to CactusJoe for organizing!!! This was a great event. Somehow the keg ended up at my house and a few stragglers ended up in my hot tub

Fun stuff, it was nice to see everyone. Had some really good prospects there, unfortunately everyone rides a medium frame.

The beer was soooooooo good! Props To cactus J for making it all happen.

Second that! Good times, and appreciate the effort to pull this together.

We tried but failed miserably to drain the keg @ DG's place... still prob. 1/3 of it left or so?

    So how was the shower?

The Syncro.. aka "money pit"?, (but VW freaks dont let a few $$$$ stand in the way of their passion? er uh obsession? ) It's not for sale, but you might be able to find one here

I hate those new commercials with Brooke Shields BTW.. That is *NOT* a VW van.. its a chrysler in 'expensive' clothing (gag)

People are paying super high prices these days.. just take a look at these guys in Cali.

I know the owner, great guy and they do stellar work, but definitely not cheap.

I think I came home with more stuff than I brought
Nobody wanted that Reto Moby seatpost or the featherlite aluminum kickstand....damn. That thing only wieghs 25 grams.

Nice trade on a Flite gel sadlle for some Ti skewers I had laying around. I'm sure the saddle will be used soon.
Thanks for the 8-speed XT shifters they will get cleaned up and put on P's Giant asap as well as the nice Scandium handlebar
The best deal of the day was a Fox rear shock I got for the sum of 25 dead presidents. Rebuilt and all. Thanks girls.
Also kudo's for giving away those helmets to people who want to try that kind of stuff. I'm sure you saved them big bucks.
I need to ride more and work less.

Wow good times. Collected enough tips to cover the keg and for the record, there was 28 bucks left over which will go toward Spring Fling festivities in March.

The best part is, even though I didn't buy everything I wanted, now I know who has it.

    belated pics

it was really quite well-attended for our little community.

The lot and the ramadas were full, some good deals to be had.

If you missed me, I was chasing her around.

The best part about this, as a swap meet, is that our typical MTBR membership has pretty refined tastes in bike parts. You go to the El Tour swap (this weekend!) and you'll find a LOT of junk. But I saw very, very little true crap at our swap.

you did not see my humble pile...

thanks Paul for the nametags - that was a nice addition.

my only 2 suggestions would be:
    1. music
    2. everyone be sure to lock your bikes in the lot. Fortunately, it all went well, but I noticed people I did not recognize passing through the lot and a bunch of nice bikes unlocked.

    ...do you remember???

don't mean to bring up old $h!t, but someone had a Fox DHX coil (looked like 8.5 i2i) for sale at the swap meet, and I never found out who's it was. I think it had Push'd stickers on it (or was in a Push'd box). Does anyone know whose this was? If it was yours, could you PM me? I am in the marked for a new shock.
