    Arnett Canyon Trail (Picketpost)

A new trail, ok a revamped trail, has been officially released and it's NOT in Sedona. Go figure. The grand re-opening of the L.O.S.T. Arnett Canyon Segment occurred on Sunday. A few of us happened to be in the area a couple weeks prior and decided it was close enough to completion, so we rode it. Dayum. It's good.

The Arnett Canyon trail splits off the AZT about 0.2 miles south of Picketpost trailhead and runs east towards Superior along Arnett Creek. It's a mostly hidden canyon between US60, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum & Picketpost Mtn. Extra bonus, Arnett Creek was flowing. We rode about 3 miles and looking back, think we missed a lefthand turn as the trail should pop you out near the Superior Airstrip. Instead we went right onto another 'trail', Telegraph Canyon trail, not to be confused with Telegraph Canyon Rd., aka: FR4. This trail is super rugged, mostly hike-a-bike, has seen some severe destruction from recent storms and is generally rugged by nature. However, it's only a mile, is incredibly scenic and we had to good fortune to see more flowing water, waterfalls & pools back in there. It connects to Telegraph Canyon Rd. and can easily be made into a loop around Picketpost Mtn.

Superior is on the upswing when it comes to mountain biking. There's an entire trail system in the works and the funding is there from Resolution Copper in exchange for the Oak Flat mining project. I'd expect things to move along rather quickly compared to other areas stuck in red tape.

Here's the project page from 2016 discussing the overview.

Here's a more current, in depth presentation of the proposed trails. *Telegraph Canyon trail is on the proposal, but it's the only one listed as a primarily hiking trail. There's really not much they can do with it other than clean up the storm damaged sections. That would be a huge help though.

Plenty of shade in the canyon too.

    A little bit chunky.

    Refreshing pools.

    Junction with Telegraph Canyon Rd.

Both trails are now posted on Trailforks. I marked Arnett Canyon as Blue & Telegraph Canyon as Red. I'm hoping to get back out there this weekend to see where the actual endpoint of Arnett Canyon trail is located. You could also make a loop going north of US60 along FR8 back to the AZT.

Looks awesome, thanks! That could make a great alternative for the Punisher B route rather than going right into Superior. With acceptable HAB quota met on Telegraph Canyon Tr, too!

It'll probably happen. Both B & C routes. I need to confirm the actual exit route of Arnett Canyon trail, I'd only consider sending riders up Telegraph Canyon trail if the storm damage stuff gets cleaned up. Otherwise, the rocky HAB bits in there are probably quicker/easier than all the 4x4 road of Telegraph Canyon that it would bypass. Of course this would also eliminate any Circle K resupply, so I may have it route by the airstrip...

Here's the full recap from our ride beyond Arnett Canyon. Some beautifully rugged terrain out there.

Aren't you doing the 750 with me, Joe?!?

Awesome writeup John. Parts of that backcountry area look like some of the places I've been exploring near Anza Borrego. Though I haven't found anything quite as impressive to hike a bike up.

No not this year. Thinking about a faster run on 300 for next year.
