2 BMX riders died in crash near Wickenburg

    Wow, how tragic.

Team officials: 2 BMX riders died in crash near Wickenburg

Two well-known BMX riders who were killed Tuesday likely died in the same collision that also left a Department of Public Safety helicopter pilot dead near Wickenburg.

Rickey Bates of Casselbury, Fl., and Gary Dimartine of Galloway, N.J., were driving to Phoenix from a trade show in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, according to Sputnic BMX, a Florida-based parts and accessories company.

According to Brien Kielb, a team manager for Sputnic, Bates and Dimartine apparently tried to pass another car when the SUV they were in hit another vehicle head-on near Wickenburg, Kielb said.

DPS officials would not say if the Bates and Dimartine were the two out-of-state men who died in a Ford Explorer that hit a DPS Chevrolet Lumina sedan driven by pilot Matthew Uhl on the same night in the same area. The Explorer, which had out-of-state license plates, was traveling south on U.S. 93 and presumably tried to pass a slower vehicle, the DPS said. The Explorer collided head-on into a Chevrolet Lumina that was heading north at Milepost 188.

Bates was a member of the Sputnic BMX pro team and the Shadow Conspiracy Team, Kielb said. He had been riding for about four years.

"We're all in shock, Kielb said."The last time we saw them was Saturday when we were getting ready to get on our plane to Vegas and they decided to drive."

Kielb knew both men for a little over a year and had gotten to know Bates well. Bates created a video series called "Banned." Dimartine often helped Bates in the filming of the videos. The two men were filming the latest of the videos around the time of the collision.

"Both were soft spoken, always motivated to get work done on their bikes and get up early to film missions," Kielb said.

"They would travel to Jacksonville, Tampa, Atlanta and other places to motivate kids in the area to join them and contribute to their projects and videos."

DPS spokesman Bart Graves said Wednesday that Uhl was "a very skilled pilot" who always was willing to step up and perform "spectacular" missions. One of those missions was on Feb. 20, 2010.

Uhl, who had been flying for the DPS since 2006, was piloting a search-and-rescue mission that saved the life of a 3-year-old girl who had wandered away from her Cordes Lake home.

Fifteen hours after Victoria Bensch went missing, Uhl and medic Eric Tarr spotted her Queensland heeler, named Blue, in a dry creek bed near the Bensch home. They soon found Victoria, who smiled at the sight of safety. The DPS workers immediately spread the word of the rescue and quickly returned Victoria and Blue to their home.

Uhl is survived by his wife and four children, ranging in ages from 8 to 14, who live in Chandler.

U.S. 93 narrows to only one lane in each direction where the collision occurred. The stretch of the highway is considered extremely dangerous because it's not very well lit. That particular section is a hot spot for fatal collisions.

The DPS said there was no sign of impairment in either driver.

Terrible. US 93 commands respect and attention more than almost any road I've traveled.
