When do you replace your helmet?

There is the conventional wisdom that says to replace your helmet every two years or so. I'm usually good for a good crash every three years that cracks my helmet; did one today. Time for a new helmet. How about you?

Mine was cracked on the right rear; still seeing stars. This is the only bike part the wife doesn't quibble about. What the? Are You all right? You have enough scars to dig and you need to slow down; I hope that heals okay; your grounded until you get a new helmet..

every 2-3 years, if i don't crash first. all the sweat and salt i'm guessing breaks down the foam - my own speculation, no sources cited. though wifey, who's only started riding more in the past year, noticed her helmet's inspection date looks like it was in 2000! so yeah, we're looking for a new helmet for her, even though she's never hit her head while riding.
    will you rep me?

My five year old helmet has multiple cracks that came from crashing on it the day I bought it.

Not advising that anyone follow my example.

From moto riding I remember reading the same thing. On top of the crap your head puts out, the heat cycling also diminishes the crumple intent of the lids. Granted I bought a new moto lid almost every year, and I JUST replaced my mtb lid from 2003 because I lost some foam.
