A lot of people ride with Giro helmets, and I here they are good. Personally I have a nice throw away Schwinn helmet.

The one that protects your melon. Everyone has a different shaped head, get one that fits your riding style as well as the shape of your melon, try them on, then once you know which brands fit you comfortably you can buy your next one online if you feel the urge. But go to your LBS and try a few on, different ones have different features, amounts of ventilation, padding, visors, sizing systems. etc.

I wear a Bell Faction. It doesn't cool the best but it protects well and it's cheap.

I was looking for a replacement for my 11 year old Specialized Sub-Zero this spring. I didn't have $130-ish to spend on a helmet, so I decided to try a Giro Transfer. It's light, comes in white, and has a very good, very adjustable retention system, which is also comfortable for my rather larger dome. And, it cools quite well. The bonus...I found it online for $25 on sale.
