What do you keep in your pockets?

I'm used to riding in gym shorts and wanted a more durable pair of mountain bike shorts. I've noticed most mountain bike shorts have a few pockets.

So what are the experienced riders keeping in their pockets that can't fit in the seat bag? Clue me in fellows.

Also, any good brand name recommendations on shorts?

In my short pockets are wallet, keys, occasionally change, maybe an energy bar, sometimes my phone, map, toque. I don't wear roadie style jerseys on my mtb as my pack covers the pockets.

Phone and visa in my left pocket and a specialized emt multitool which also holds my housekey in my right. Don't need much else if the ride is 3hrs or less.

Fitbit in my left pocket, alarm fob in the right - I ride to the mountain from my garage.
Life is short - enjoy the ride!

Only soft things go in shorts pockets. I have seen folks bruise themselves with wallets and keys. Saw a broken phone too. You don't want to land on it. Gels, a light leash for the dog. I might put stuff in a jersey pocket or swat shorts and that is less exposed in a crash I suppose.

Nothing. There is a pack on your back for a reason.

When I don't have a pack (like dirt jumping) it's the keys.

sometimes a camera in the zippered cargo pocket. Sometimes a trail map. Things I might access frequently. Otherwise, it goes in the pack.

Pack, or if I'm really feeling it, fanny pack. Nothing says "nearly Olympic" better than a fanny pack.

most of my dirt riding is in Endura Humvee's. Left front upper pocket can of Grizzly wintergreen, left front lower pocket that is velcro, gel paks. Right front lower (zippered) Spyderco Delcia. Everything else in the Mule Camelbak.
