    Universal fit helmets

So what's the story with universal fit helmets? I'm in the market for something new. To me it seems like a bad idea but I've been combing through the archives and looking at different models. It seems like a lot of people like the universal fit ring better. A layer of air between you and the helmet to keep you cool. More stability. Anybody have any opinions either way?

I will not wear one. It may be comfortable but it is not protective.

An air space between your head and the helmet's impact absorbing material lets your head accelerate before that gap is closed (and it must close for the helmet to work). I suffered a moderately severe concussion while wearing an equestrian helmet that used a fit system that created a gap at the back. A similar fall with a Giro Semi resulted in no injury.

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common

That makes total sense, thanks. I guess nobody has any defense of the one size fits all design.
