Time for some new shoes (me not bike)

    Riding Style: Mountain biking :chortle:

    Bike: Kona Process 134

    Pedals: Platforms/pins

Time to get me some new riding shoes. I have been using some old Puma runners (that weren't very good for running), they worked b/c they were very stiff (full leather upper), smooth underneath (allowed slight adjustment on pins), and didn't get water logged (synthetic leather upper?).

Like the look of some outdoor style shoes (i.e. Hiking, camping styles), but I think they have too much tread!?

Staying away from 5Tens (I'm 41 after all).

    Not going clip-less

I did have some old casual dvs shoes that would have been perfect. But, I threw the dang things out way before I started mtb-ing.

    Suggestions (with links) welcome

PS - budget = under $100 nzd ($80 USD approx)

For flats I have only ever used Vans, and I'm 40. Who cares if you're 41? Are you saying you're too old for 5tens?

Yep. They look like skate park shoes. If I were at the skate park, I expect a parent might call the cops!

    I'm leaning towards Shimano SH-AM41's...

Just need to find a good deal ^^

5.10 have a lot of different styles and colors, and they simply work the best on flat pedals.

Have converted an old pair of sports shoes into mtb shoes for flats! They had lots of tread blocks on them... so I cut off the tread in the area where I place my flats/pins ^^

They're nice and stiff & (now) look similar (underneath) to some of the 5.10's I've been seeing.

Was actually another thread around here about siping your own tyres that gave me the idea. Thought why can't I make my own shoes!?

Almost pulled the trigger on some $75 Venzo's+multi pedals! Couldn't do it after the wee spend up I've had on tyres lately ^^

May not look like much, but they'll do the job...

Do your self a favour and just buy 5.10's, I'm the same age as you and can't fathom why you wouldn't want to ride the best shoe for the job.
I've tried teva, shimano and others and none really can match stealth rubber.

You're in NZ right? Torpedo7 have some good deals on various 5.10 models at the present.

I'm 48 and ride with 5.10 ' s. Really sticky with the right pedals. I always change pedal pin configurations right out of the box to position where my feet get best traction.

Just picked up some Sombrio floats at Backcountry that were on sale for about 30 bucks. Kind of stiff so hopefully they break in soon.

I'm 55. Love my 510 mccaskill shoes. Grip pins on flats almost like clip ins. I know I look stupid, but they work and to me that is all that matters.
