Spacer/pad for cleat plate in clipless shoes?

After many years, I recently switched back to clipless pedals for trail/AM riding. I'm on CB Mallet E pedals and Shimano AM9 shoes (since they fit like my DX shoes for downhill). I'm surprised no one has come out with a protective plate or something to cover the cleat plate and screws inside the shoe. I definitely feel the metal plate and the gap where the plate sits in. I know I'll be taking a dremel to shorten the screws a tiny bit but I'm looking for ideas on how to cover and even everything out inside the shoe.

I don't have experience with those shoes in particular, but in the many pairs of clipless shoes I've had there's always been part of the sole in the shoe that covered the nut plate. It's sometimes a flap or a section that can be lifted to access the plate. The usual removable insole went over this. Perhaps it's missing from your shoes?

I've had the same problem with my Shimano and Scott shoes. I'm experimenting with putting some thin square pieces of foam over that area and then a strong piece of duct tape. It is annoying that expensive shoes sometimes leave us still having to fix their problems, but usually we have certain brands that fit our feet so we make due.
