    A Simple Helmet Question
    Hey, everyone! I'm new to all of this, so please bear with me.

    I just started riding, and I have an Ops Core FAST Helmet replica that I use for airsoft. Will that be suitable for trail riding too, or will it not protect my head if I take a fall?

    The helmet (Ops Core FAST Helmet replica for airsoft) seems non conventional for mtb. Is it suppose to protect you from paint ball hits to the head, or from falling and hitting your head during a game? I'm not familiar with this sport. Even if the shell is made out of durable stuff, the inside foam and harness system may not be, and may not protect you in a bike crash.

    Any helmet is better than no helmet, so if that's what you have, wear it.

    That said, a quick google search for a pic leads me to believe that
    1) it's not going to give you an adequate level of protection for MTB
    2) it's terrible at venting, so it's going to be hot inside that helmet.

    Seriously, buy an MTB helmet, and make sure it fits. It doesn't have to be expensive. There's plenty of decent, safe MTB helmets under $40.

    Very true. There isn't actually a lot of foam in there, so you have a very good point.

    It's actually got excellent venting. The model that I have is the one with the holes in the top, so it vents perfectly. I think you guys are right though; I need an upgrade.

    What type should I be looking for? A full-face helmet, or is that overboard since I'm not planning to ride trails like Gee Atherton, lol.

    That'll depend on what type of riding you do plan on doing. If you're riding cross country trails you probably do not need (or want) a full face helmet.

    Personally, I only wear my full face when I'm riding lift assisted downhill. Or any sort of gnarly free ride (hike a bike, lift assisted).

    I also have three bike lids... a full face for the above mentioned use, a skate type lid for DJ / urban and a more traditional mtb lid for trail riding and road riding.

    I bought a Giro Feature helmet from my local bike shop, so I'm good now!

    Great choice DrumsXO :) Value, protection and looks good! I'm always a fan of companies that make high quality stuff for a decent price

    Yeah, I thought it was a nice choice too! It's a nice balance between a skateboard helmet and the typical bike helmets, which have always looked kinda goofy to me. :p
