    Shorts? On-line ordering?
I ride about 3x per week on mainly wooded trails with several logs dirt berms. My rides are usually no greater than 2 hours. I wear gym shorts and they do "ok" but not ideal. I need a pair of shorts for that riding as well as 4-5 hour rides that I plan to do. Can anyone recommend a pair of shorts for such? Also, is there a top-rated on-line site to byt that kind of stuff that most like?

I also wear gym shorts...I really like them but I would prefer to have a couple of pockets.

I would also like to know what y'alls favorite site is?

Pearl Izumi seems to get top ratings. MTB shorts seem to go for "baggie" or whatever. I do a lot of road bike and so use road bike shorts -- thikh "chamois" in the butt and Lyrca Spandex.

The difference between high end shorts and less expensive is in the chamois. Also, high end shorts are six panel construction and the less expensive are four panel. But then I'm talking about road bike shorts. I have no idea what people wear for MTB

I have some bibs -- suspenders over the shoulders, no rolling on the waist band. Two pair of standard waisted shorts -- one medium weight and one lighter. I prefer the bibs for road bike, medium for MTB.

Mostly, you don't want a lot of loose material bunching up between your butt and the saddle. Chafe, rub, bunch . . .

As regards pockets -- Not on the pants. Get a jersey w/ pockets, or a hydration pack w/ pockets. Shorts are where the movement is happening. You don't want stuff in pockets hanging off your 'engine."

If you buy online, make sure you can return them if they don't fit. Since they're worn sans underwear, some consider them like swim suits and not eligible for return/refund. Good news is they're Lyra Spandex and easy to find a decent fit.

Still -- It's worth what you might spend to shop in person at the LBS and get some fitting options when you buy.

I prefer the unpadded MTB shorts. I have several padded liner shorts. I never could find a pair of padded shorts that fit quite right, go figure. My favorite riding combo is a pair of Rockgardn karmas and a pair of pearl izumi liner shorts underneath.

I am using Sugoi and now Bellweather as well. I like both. They make a huge difference in comparison to standard gym shorts, which I also used to ride in. Once you ride in padded shorts, you will keep the gym shorts for the gym.

i find it hard to spend extra cash for the padded when my long lycra pants from target do just fine and i rarely get a sore ass.

are there shorts without the padding? even on nashbar.com i have a hard time finding a good deal without padding. is the padding removalable usually? and still just as comfy with the padding removed?

I have been using Endura, Fox and Specialized baggies over bibs. Works really well. And after trying bibs years ago, I doubt that I will ever wear non-bibs.
