    Shoes for flat and clipless.

Any shoes i can use on my recently purchased
Flat pedals but i can eventually use on clipless pedals? I like the styling of 510s but not sure if there are any that can do both in 2018. Can only afford the shoes for now and need the shoes now. Want to switch to clipless sometime this year.

    Any recommendations?

I think ill hit REI later today.

If you choose flat pedals with stubby or short rounded not sharp pins you don't need special shoes. Those 5.10s are DH shoes to go with long sharp pins for higher speeds and big air. Use runners you already own with open tread, get off the seat to put your weight on the pedals and tilt your heels down in the back. It's almost impossible to come off your flat pedals with this correct technique. A bump has to scrape your weighted foot across the pins to get you off. It doesn't happen. But if you sit on the seat with no weight on your feet, if you keep your feet horizontal a bump can pop your foot up and off. I use Adidas Supernova Boost runners. I don't ride clipped in. The white Styrofoam looking midsole is the best at damping the trail vibrations from rocky sections that can numb your feet if you ride them fast. Continental tire rubber tread.

They run small by half size or so.

Different animals. Get shoes for flats and different shoes for clipless. For flats, you want flat bottom shoes with tacky rubber and moderate stiffness so you can feel the pedal under your foot. Clipless shoes have very stiff soles to spread the force of the pedal/cleat over your foot and the cleat recess is usually surrounded by lugged soles which don't work will on flats. Yeah, there are shoes that kinda work (poorly) on both and I've tried some on both. N.G.
    Do the math.
