    Shoes

I can't afford biking shoes but what would you say is the next best thing? I'll be wearing them year round so do you think i should go with a pair of cross-trainers or what? thanks.

IMHO if you ride platforms (which it sounds like you do) try and find something with a soft and flat sole, to give you max grip....I like vans, VSW, airwalk, or something else of that nature....If your wanting to go clipless keep an eye on the online shops as you will be able to find spd shoes and clipless pedals on closeout or whatever and get some real cheap. A few months ago I was able to get a pair of SPD shoes for like 45.00.

    can't afford?

Try ebay. I picked up a brand new pair of specialized sport shoes for $18 about a month ago + $12 for new clipless pedals for the commuter bike = $30 total

Nashbar usually has some cheap closeouts, pricepoint has some good deals, and sierratradingpost.com might have some bicycle shoes.

I agree with the vans, airwalk, ethnies and also don't forget the oakley's model switchback they're good for platform pedals. x-training shoes their soles are not that hard compared to the brands mentioned above you could actually feel the pedals goun uphill
