Listen! Senior Design Thesis - Rethinking Hydration on the Mountain

    Hello all,

I am a senior design student at Virginia Tech. My thesis is a semester long exploration into rethinking hydration during mountain biking.

Instead of a boring survey, I thought we could start a discussion.

The issues I have with my 70 oz. Camelbak Rogue are as follows
    • It is sweltering during the summer
    • It has poor airflow across my back
    • The pack's placement causes me to feel slightly off balance
    • When half empty, I can definitely feel sloshing
    • It is hard to clean/refill
    • I do not trust it to protect my phone from water
    • The straps do not secure it enough to prevent movement during jumps
    • The hose and bite valve are not situated within reach of my mouth
    • I feel as if the water output could be more regulated

I encourage all of you to post your personal issues with your particular method of hydration, be it a backpack, bottles, frame pack, or other.

In addition, feel free to post solutions, or workarounds you have developed to help you stay hydrated.

Your responses will provide valuable insight into all aspects of hydration. I will apply those insights as I design a solution, which I will post in a follow up at the end of my thesis.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
    Conor

most of your issues with your particular camelback would be solved by having a waist belt, using a bladder with a division in it like the camelback antidote, or better yet get an osprey pack. . .

I like to freeze my bladder with 1/4 of the water I need, this helps keep my back cooler. I would suggest you find a different thesis project, there are quite a few companies that make "camelbacks" and they have all developed solutions to your problems.
