Recommend a helmet to a beginner please...

My LBS has some starting at $40, should I start out with one of those basic shells or is there a preferred helmet most riders like?

Fit is the most important aspect of helmet choice. Most if not all conform to the minimum safety standard set for bicycle helmets.

I use a Gyro Indicator. It fit my noggin and was inexpensive.

All about fit like CarolinaLL6 said. I personally wear a bottom of the line Bell helmet because it feels fine on my head and I didn't have a lot of extra money when I bought it.

The most important thing, definitely, is to at least wear one.

Buy what fits. They are all tested to the same spec for safety. Some have more vents than others, some are lighter than others, some look better than others, some cost more than others, etc....

Don't skimp on a helmet. I have the Fox Flux helmet. It fits my head great and is very comfortable. It also has a liner that keeps the sweat out of my eyes.

I picked up an el cheapo helmet from wally-world for like $21.. Fits my ginormous head comfortably and did not cost me an arm and a leg. More money to spend on the bike!!! Some of the higher priced helmets will offer things like Faction95's but really you do not need much of anything other than a brain bucket.
