    Protection

I'm planning on getting up early, about 4am, once I get my new bike and setting out but here In ontario it only gets bright around 5:15am. Anyways, I will be riding roads and was wondering what protection I needed and if you guys have any suggestions on equipment. I was just planning on getting a blinking light but now I'm considering getting one of those vests though that seems really 'soft'... Any suggestions?

EDIT: Also, how important is it to wear a helmet when I'm not riding on trials or any intense mountain biking? The laws around here are pretty lax and I really don't want to take it out when the worst case scenario is a skinned knee...

    Wear the helmet

Having had to clean up after an individual went out for a "short" ride, "only around the block", I have the following advice.

    Wear the helmet!

Falling over and hitting your head on the curb, or anything else hard can ruin your day, and the first responders that have to deal with the results.

Helmets are nice, unless your head is not worth protecting.

You're going road riding in the dark and you want to know whether mountain bikers think you should wear a helmet, huh?

Nope, I think you're already set. Just be sure to get a nice vest, one of the really soft ones.

    Protection at night

I don't think you need to wear a helmet unless you are planning to go downhill riding at 4am The only thing you need at 4 am is a $20 LED headlight.

I ended up getting a face mask and a head helmet for the road.
