    MTB helmet vs road helmet

Is there a difference between the two? Or is it safe to use a road helmet in the dirt?

I ride XC only, no jumps over 2-3 ft for me

They both comply with the same safety standards. They tend to have different features (road helemts usually don't come with visors, for example).

It's safe to use a road helmet in the dirt, IMO.

It's pretty much the visor and style that are different between them...altho some mountain helmets have more head coverage.

Like Bikinfoolferlife said some mountain helmets offer more
coverage, which is a good thing. The helmets I have tend to
have better coverage in the back.So if you are going up a
steep hill and fall over backwards, and hit the back of your
head you will be better protected.

I asked a guy at my LBS the same question just to see what he'd say...... his reply........"a visor".

Then there are road helmets like this that have little use on the trail...

    What?!

I've always wanted to line up for a mtb race with a teardrop helm.
