m180 shoes - what are the bolts for?

hi all, I've been happily using shimano m180 shoes for a couple of months now on my 959s - very happy with them. Anyway just a question, what are the two bolts screwed into the sole under the toes for? All the shimano manual says is that you shouldn't screw spikes into them - not very helpful. I don't know of any cleats that could really be mounted that far forward.

Happy for any insights anyone has.

surely a couple of hard rubber knobs would be more practical, lighter, and cheaper?

oh well thanks for the response Murchman.

Yes , they are knobs for traction.
