Knee and elbow pad fit tips

I am trying to decide which size knee and elbow pads would be best. I ordered large and xl Troy Lee speed knee and elbow pads. Both sizes fit. Would I better off with a tighter fit or looser fit? I rode around a bit and I am not restricted in way of range of motion on the large.

My experience with anything that relies on stretch material for fit is that they will stretch out some after the first couple rides, so you want them pretty snug.
