Five Ten shoes compatibility with beaters?

I will be picking up some new shoes for next season, and the Five Ten Maltese Falcons really seem to tickle my fancy. The styling looks awesome and they have really good reviews... The way the bottom cleat cutout looks makes me wonder how compatible they are with Crank Bros Candys though.

Anyone running this set up? Maybe the cutout is just bigger than it looks in the pictures?

I run Maltese Falcons with CB Mallets. IMHO they don't have a stiff enough sole/shank to run with a small profile pedal. I ended up running one shim between the cleat and the shoe. Too much contact between the shoe and the pedal platform without the shim, made it tough to clip in and out. But as I have them set up, the pins sink right in as soon as you put your weight on the pedals. Hope this helps.

I should also add that I originally ran theses shoes with Shimano XT trail pedals, but found they didn't offer enough contact area with the shoe leading to a pressure point and achy feet. Hence why I switched to the mallets.
