fin on some pro helmets ?

I have been watching many world cups (DVD) and have noticed a fin on some of the pros helmets located on the top back area. Does any one know the purpose of this ? Arial for communication devise inside the helmet, aerodynamics or just because it looks cool ?

A lot of helmets come with fins these days, especially moto helmets. I have one on my 661 Flight, and it really helps with torsional wind deflection at top speeds....

I think its mostly for looks. If the fins actually made a difference aerodynamically wouldn't moto GP racer's helmets have them?

whenever roadies give me **** for having a visor tell 'em I use it to create down force while cornering at high speed. Better get me one of these fins too.

Road race helmets are already a million and two times more aerodynamic than motocross helmets, so even if the fin provided an aerodynamic benefit of some sort, it'd be entirely unnecessary.

A road race helmet is like a needle in the wind, and a motocross helmet is more like a giant cup.
