Chamois Shorts
Why do shorts with chamois padding so expensive? I managed to get a few of mine on clearance, but prices of the new one going into 150s for bibs. I don't even pay 100 bucks for blue jeans...

I use the $20 pricepoint house brand 6 panel and I'm pretty happy with them. And get this, they are made in the USA for $20 can't beat that.

There are some very good options for under $100 (yes, bibs are more expensive). But in my experience so far, the better ones do cost more. IMO, it mostly comes down to the quality of the chamois. Makes a big difference to me on longer rides.
Also, the quality I find in some more expensive bike shorts is really in a different league than most clothes I buy.

15mm is a second-best solution to a problem that was already solved.

I wish I knew the answer. I'm a fan of Jett MTB inner shorts but the are not cheap. But after a long ride, they're worth it.

+1 - I try to avoid MTB shorts with a inner chamois due to the cost and the fact I'll just cut the padded inner out and throw it away.

I did an all day ride with another chamois and paid a heavy toll. Those Jett liners are fantastic.

I've always done fine with $60ish shorts.
If someone wants to buy $150 shorts, someone else will make them for him.

search hard enough and thou shalt get cheaper bibs. 30-40 bucks on mine, known brands just seaon old or older.

Pearl Izumi Quest or Attack shorts on Amazon are between 25-40 USD.
Great quality, just read the reviews. People compare them to shorts costing 3-4x as much.

it does cost a lot but ... the one, the only, dead lamb skin on the taint is a godsend during epics. it takes the beating whilst your hoohoo is protected

So to get it straight there is the one. I have been saving for not just a short with a liner but the one. What is the best chamois?

Matter of opinion.
Lately, I wear Castelli. Primarily because they make our team kit. They offer two chamois', the KISS and the X2. The X2 is twice as thick, and some people think it's the second coming while others prefer the KISS pad.
For myself, I think it's better to have a relatively thin, dense chamois. It's not a cushion, and I don't want it to squish "up in there" on a longer ride. But my teammates who prefer the X2 have been riding for a very long time, so I'm hesitant to say they're wrong; instead I think it's subjective.
I've been happy with Pearl Izumi too. The cheapest Performance shorts aren't good enough, but a lot of people swear by their Century short, which I think is the second-cheapest. I haven't tried it.
