Big ears VS. Full Face Helmet.

I received my Giro Cipher helmet from UPS today, Jenson USA had them for $90, so at a deal like that was hard to turn down. When I bought the helmet I measured my head to get the right fit. It was right at border between medium and large. I have big ears, like called dumbo on the playground, gets am/fm and can on a clear day get sattelite tv big. So I decided to get a L to compensate for my ears. When I tried it on today following the instructions in the Giro manual, the fit isn't right. But I can't hardly get the thing over my ears, the cheekpads fold them down. I can't get a return cause of the discount. I was considering getting the Medium sized cheekpads to get a little more snug fit, but again my ears might not get past them. For the my fellow self-sustained radio folks, have you ever had this issue and what have you done about it?

Use your thumbs to hold in your ears as you initially pull the helmet on. Also pull the straps out and slide your ears in thru the strap area.
