    ? about new clipless shoes

just got some clipless mtb shoes last week. they came with metal "cleats" that screw into the bottom of each shoe towards the front (two per shoe). do i need to install these? what are they used for?

They are for added traction, in mud orsnow or sand, if you do alot of hike-and-bike type stuff. They aren't needed and don't impact the clipless system one way or another.
