661 filter shoes. What to do?

I recently acquired a pair of six six one filter SPD shoes. I plan on running them with Crank Brothers cleats for clipless dh riding with my mallets. (I still have my 5.10's when I'm not racing) When I try to put the cleats on, the level is not high enough to reach above the rubber and clip in to my pedals. I tried using a couple spacers from an e.13 chainguide to raise the cleat level, but this only slightly helps. I still have trouble clipping in/out.

My options seem to be to:
    A. Use more spacers to raise the cleats higher.
    B. Trim away the rubber from the sole of the shoe for more clearance (I would rather not)
    C. ???

    Anybody have this issue?
If you're not living on the edge you're taking up to much space.

That's weird. I've been running 661 Filter's for a long time, and only had to use one cleat spacer to get them high enough to engage effortlessly.
    Meh.

If they are new cleats they will take some time to break in also. May be part of the problem.
