Trek Roscoe 8, are there any better alternatives?

This seems like a solid hardtail, I don't know a whole lot about specs when it comes to wheelsets or drivetrains. I do know how to somewhat tell of a bikes quality by looking if it has a tapered headtube, thru axle, air forks and stuff like that but thats pretty much it.

I was looking around and found a GT Pantera Comp the difference I can find right of the bat is the rear axle on the trek looks stronger, and the slight weight difference, might not be slight since I don't have much experience about weight. Maybe its the wheelset that sets it apart, since I know lighter weight wheels is what makes the most difference as surprising it sounded at first to me.

Is the $400+ price difference justifiable? I think I'm missing something here, I understand why cheap Walmart bikes are cheap, but when it comes to 2 of these I'm sort of blind.

The Roscoe drivetrain is better. The fork is better but neither are that good. You can negotiate with a manager only for 20 off or so for cash. Or wait for before Labor Day for more. You may have to check a half dozen to find one who'll work with you to get a deal done.

The fact that the 8 comes with a dropper, makes it the winner IMHO. That bike is solid at that price range. Check out the Trek forum, see what feedback you can find there.
