    Rigid "All Mountain" 26er...discuss

    Looking for a nice complement to my TransAM.

    Thinking of building up my Chromag Aperture with a Voodoo Zombie fork (470mm). 26" wheels. Singlespeed (with BB tensioner).

    Goal is to have a burly "AM" singlespeed. It would be light enought for my level of XC riding, but tough enough to handle some chunk...no jumps, though.

    Anyway, I am looking for some opinions. Would I be better off with a 29er? I am thinking 26" wheels would be good becuase I find them to hold up better than 29er wheels.

    Will the 26" wheels be too much of a compromise? What do you think about the idea in general?

    I'd definitely go 29er after spending significant amounts of time on rigid 26 and rigid 29.

    There are a few guys going big on rigid 29er AM bikes.

    Yeah...that's what I thought folks might say.

    Trouble is, I have a hrd time keeping the 29er wheel true. I've owned custom, high end, etc. Nothing stays true. So back to 26".

    I was hoping someone might posts some photos of a bike similar to what I'm thinking of building. I did see one Chromag on the forums here, very similarly built to my concept.

    Better rims? Some of the wide stuff nowadays is really stout whereas before the MTX33 and Kris Holm rims were the only rims that would hold up to abuse.

    You're consistently bending the front or rear wheels? If it's the rear that you're bending, why not go 96er? You can fine tune the final A2C length to match front 26er wheels with the fork length of your choice. A fork as short as 420mm could accommodate a 29er wheels.

    I used to run the Zombie fork on my 26er SS. Recently changed to NINER carbon fork. I ride everywhere my mates with 5~6" FS bikes ride. But if you ride some real gnar, suggest to go 29er upfront for a better rollover capabilities.

    A 470mm A2C fork isn't that long. It's just an unsagged 100mm travel fork or a 120mm sagged fork.

    which sounds pretty good for a Chromag Aperture.

    I have trouble with both front and rear wheels...29er wheels, that is. Right now I am riding Transition Revolution 32 wheels, and they are great. Not too heavy, and are staying true through the chunk. I can ride them with out worrying aobut them. They are not as "fast" as 29er wheels, but...I digress.

    I thought about the 69er concept...the Voodoo fork I bought will allow both 26 and 29" wheels...so in the future I may give that combo a shot. I even thought about 650b...but I am not sure that it fits the frame, and I've already had some 650b flow wheels that were underwhelming. I really did not notice that much benefit, but I did notice the flex. Perhaps they would've been better built with straight guage spokes.

    The more thoght I give this build, the more I am thinking that I will stay 26" front and rear. And probably go with 2.4 tires at least.

    I think the 470mm axle to crown measurement, while common for XC 29ers, will give the front end of the Aperture a bit more lift...and set the geometry very similar to a 140mm 26" suspension fork. Does that sound correct? That is the geo feel that I am going for.

    I begin the build next Wednesday when all the parts arrive. I will post pics, and am still interested in feedback.

    Here's a rare pic of my Strange (tm) Chromag Stylus ... Rare in having a somewhat clear view of the front end



    The fork is a 465 mm high DJ fork from Identiti. DJ forks seem to have less off-set than normal forks, while 29er forks have some more. At least in theory, the increased off-set is supposed to make a 29er easier to turn. I have no clue how much that affects steering in real life.

    Fat tires are definitely a good idea. 2.4" Fat Alberts fit the Stylus frame quite comfortably, on Mavic 721 rims. The tread pattern is deeper than I really need but at least I'm not worrying about shredded side walls. Actually, the rear tyre is getting pretty worn, so the excess tread is gone by now I'd like to try a little bigger tires but then you get into heavy weights and slow rolling.

    There's another rigid Chromag Stylus in the Chromag Photo Thread in Canadian Bikes. That one is with 650b wheels but the tires are slimmer than mine. Otherwise, they wouldn't fit. I'm not quite sure what kind of tyre clearance the Aperture has.

    A 29er wheel and 470 mm fork would make the front end taller and raise the BB too. That could well be just right for someone else. I don't think I would like the height.

    Thru-axle? I rock one of their thru-axle models on a bike I built for use in the local skate park. I like their fork a great deal. It's good stuff.

    I got the 1420 model: 20mm axle with 14 mm ends. Just because I already had the wheel with 20mm hub.

    Those DJ forks are RIGID. As in they don't soften the ride like some lighter steel and carbon forks that are "oh so smooth".

    Howdy Folks...back with an update for ya.

    Long story short, I did not go rigid on the front. I have the rigid fork, but came across a nice deal on a NOS Fox squisher fork for the front.

    I tried the Blackspire Stinger singlespeed tensioner option, and...MEH. I have no idea how perttime got that thing to work on his setup. I ran in to all types of issues trying to simply get the thing to function. For starters, the mounting bolts (even without washers were clipping the cranks arms. I messed around with it for a bit, but then just moved on to plan B.

    Plan B turned out to be VERY perfect. I futzed with a magic gear option, and foundthat 23x17 is perfect. Very happy, even though I would like a taller gear.

    Anyway, here is the finsihed product, and YES...I repainted the frame from the horrid aqua color.

    That's my 96er. Rides good the back wheel keeps it fun on the jumps. I don't see why you would ride 26" if you didn't want to do drops. It made me want to buy ventanas factory 96er. ..... What's with the suspension up front ?

    32/17? I thought that might work.

    When installing my Stinger, I didn't know what I was doing, so had to do a couple of things to get it to work: remove granny ring bolts, and leave out any spacers anywhere. That's it. Your cranks are different, so the issues could be different too.

    This is quite common with BB mounted chainguides if you are using a converted triple crank. Most dedicated SS cranks dont have granny ring mounts and most people have to grind them down to use BB mounted guides.

    That sounds like a pretty reasonable SS gear, especially considering the squishy front end and fatter tires. I've always run 2:1 on XC singlespeeds but had 1.8-1.9:1 on my SSAMHT to make up for powerloss due to the suspension and chunkier tires all around.

    Yes. 32x17. NOT 23x17.

    The Blackspire Stinger was hitting the crank arms. I had spacers properly installed, too. Who knows. Either way, I am happy that the 32x17 worked out.

    I am headed out for an inaugural ride tonight.

    BTW, the Chromag build quality is really very good. Welds look clean, even. Rear end alignment is spot on. Tube junctions on the inside of the head tube and BB showed no "boogers" or burn through. I put some framesaver in the tubes, and am hoping that this is a keeper. Time will tell.

    A ridgid 26" AM sounds badass!!!! I used to ride a rigid raleigh m80 back in the day and it was pretty amazing how good it rode for being rigid. I'm actually looking for purchasing a super slack 26" hard tail. Don't fall in to the 29er hype! 26 is still the business and always will be. 29'ers soon will be on vinyl like all the other hipster stuff.

    Most bbs can be spaced over to make room for a Stinger.

    I haven't bought a rigid bike since 1984. With suspension I don't have problems with rims at all but if I were you I would go with something built for abuse. I've had good luck with WTB DH rims in 26" and P35s in 29er. The extra width is pretty much a win win in my book. Skinny rims are for XC racers.

    With a SS it's a lot easier to keep up your momentum with suspension. I road my friends rigid 29er a while ago and had a hard time when it got rough. I could do it but it sure was a lot of work. I'm sure if I dedicated myself to it I would get better. My friend can rip on it.
    No it never stops hurting, but if you keep at it you can go faster.

    I agree with you Modifier...at least with a 26" wheel. On my initial ride last night I was happy that I had the squishy fork. I was able to roll thru chunder quite well. I think even smoother than my old rigid 29er. I still have a rigid fork for the winter...maybe with a fat front...?

    The wheels are heavy...but strong. XT hubs on Singletrack rims. May go lighter, as I've never really had problems keeping 26" wheels true...it was always the 29ers that could not stand up to heavy trail riding.

    The magic gear is working out very well, thankfully.

    After riding 29ers for a few years, I am noticing big differences in going back to 26" wheels. For one, the cornering and twisty trail handling is superb...responsive, exact, and no flex. I do find that I have to work a little harder to maintain momentum on the wide open sections, but technical trail handling is spot on. The whole bike just feels more stout...no vague feeling at all, even with QR skewers.

    I don't know where the Aperture is painted but whoever did my Stylus used something good. Any other bike that I have, or have had, got scratches to the metal pretty quickly and my heels wore paint off of the chainstays. Not the Stylus.
