    Chain wearing carbon frames - specialized stumpjumper

    Hey everyone

    Would really appreciate your insights here. I've got myself a shiny specialized stumpjumper 2019 12 speed carbon, and I love it. It's an XL frame

    It's not done a huge amount of millage but it has done some long hard routes, did the whole enchilada in Utah. I've noticed that the chain slap has actually managed to dig in and wear the tiniest bit of the rear triangle paint and into the carbon.... Not deep, but present after not long.

    I've taken it to the store and they're saying it is ultimately just something you need to deal with when you've got carbon. Now this is my first carbon and I feel for brand new that's just not right.

    Anyone else had something similar?
    Anyone got any advice?
    It's currently in the shop getting a couple of things looked at and I'm not sure if I should accept this.

    Note, no other mechanical faults exist

    I wrap my chainstay in an old tube cut in half. Some buy 'helicopter tape' and cover their frame.

    metal chainstay protector that overlaps that area

    thin aluminum disk bent and glued down with flexible adhesive like lexel
    (flexible so if the chain eats it it won't torque chainstay apart)

    get the aluminum pieces or stainless steel

    Scott 2228 at Home Depot and wrap the areas you want to protect.

    Fancy! I use Gorilla tape, but whatever.

    Regardless of what you use, get something on there asap.

    Rear derailleur with a clutch (Shimano Shadow Plus) also helps minimizing chain slap.

    OP while you are at it I would apply some clear protective tape [many options available] to any areas where damage to your frame is likely. It will keep the bike looking nice and if you use the right product adds a lot of protection to a carbon frame from point load impacts which are the ones that will kill a frame.

    When I got a carbon frame it's the first thing I did so I could ride it hard and worry about landing on the rocks.

    WTF are you guys on about? He's got Eagle 12spd on there. Even if it were the NX version, it has a clutch.

    The problem isn't going to be fixed by switching to Shimano. That's just for SRAM brakes.

    I use a long piece of velcro with the adhesive backing along the chainstay. Really helps quiet things right down as well.

    I hate when bike companies don't fully test and engineer their products. Not including something like a downtube protector or chainstay protector when it's clearly needed is stupid.

    The 2019 Stumpjumper has an intergrated chainstay protector.

    Specialized introduced a new chainstay protector that is designed to interrupt chain slap, and well… it works. There doesn’t seem to be any real performance benefit; after all, narrow-wide chainrings and clutch-style derailleurs have all but eliminated dropped chains. Still, a quiet bike is a happy bike, and makes for a happy rider.

    Wrap an old inner tube around it. It’s free, works perfectly and makes you bike look good.

    Did anyone actually look at the picture? It’s way up next to the chain ring in a tough place to wrap or even stick anything to.

    I’d be miffed, too. for that much damage in that short of time, the area should have been protected by default. all the more so if it is really “carbon is as carbon does” like shop told you.

    I use the 3M 2228 tape posted above on all my bikes, and I've gotten it to stick to the exact spot shown in that photo on a couple different frames (every bit as tight). I've even tucked it up behind the chainring where you get gouges from chain suck.

    It conforms really well to curves. You just have to clean the area well first with some alcohol, and cut it to whatever shape works best and press it on very firmly. Sticks better when applying it when warm vs cold, so if you're working in a cold garage, hit the area with a hair dryer or heat gun before sticking it on (don't overdo and melt your frame, you just want it warm to the touch).

    Ideally, the frame protection provided by the manufacturer would cover all the high wear/damage areas, but in my experience it seldom covers everything. In the case above, it looks like the chain slap is chewing off the edge of the factory chain stay protection.

    I agree with Cleared2Land, if the shop just said "deal with it" without offering any solutions, that is poor customer service. At least offer the OP some suggestions of how to deal with it if nothing else.

    Ive got the same bike and as yet ive not had the same issue. However thast rubbish.

    my view is to ride it and if it breaks (ive already gone through one seatstay)then youve informed them of the issue
