VaMoose25 Race - Willow Winter Carnival

Vamoose25 Winter Mountain Bike Race is coming up Sunday, February 8, during the Willow Winter Carnival. Registration starts at 10am and race starts at 11am.
    www.tinyurl.com/vamoose25 has more details (or http://groups.google.com/group/valle...amoose25?hl=en )

This 25 mile race is in conjunction with the Willow Winter Carnival and will be a lollipop route on groomed trails from Willow out the West Gateway Trail around the Willow Swamp Loop and back via the West Gateway. This will be a great warm-up for the Su 50k and 100mi (mid February, Presidentís day weekend) and Alaska UltraSport (Sunday before Iditarod) races. Check out the map on the race's web page. There's a huge trail system out there if anyone is looking for a good place to ride and train. Most of the trails are groomed on a weekly basis.

New this year is the touring division for those that just want to learn a new trail system on marked trails, but want to go at their own pace. Cost is $20 for the whole shootin' match where you get an official time and points (if finish in top 10) toward the VMBaH Cup (www.tinyurl.com/vmbahraces) . Touring division is $10 - you don't get a time or points - BUT you must tell us when you finish. You can ride a shorter route - like out/back for what you're comfortable with. BUT please, stay on the marked race course, so we know where people are.

VMBaH Cup points are awarded to the first 10 finishers in each the men's and women's races - 10 for first place, 9 for 2nd, ... , 1 for 10th place. Your series total will be the sum of your top 3 races (out of 4 potential races). Series will culminate with the Mooseberry Stampede on June 13, 2009, at the Matanuska Greenbelt (Crevasse-Moraine - Farm - Kepler-Bradley). This will be the same weekend as Palmer's Colony Days. Exactly what the VMBaH Cup will be is a surprise for now, but will definitely include bragging rights to the only mountain bike race series in the valley.

Here's the Winter Carnival schedule since there's lots of things for the whole family that day: http://www.waco-ak.org/index.php/Carnival09/Schedule

Hope to see you all Sunday morning Feb 8.

Just a reminder about Sunday's VaMoose 25 at Willow - the 2nd race in the VMBaH cup series. We'll have the current standings there. I've heard they've had some decent snow.

    See you Sunday morning.

    Update

We are off to stake out the course this afternoon. Current temp in Willow is -5 but should warm in the sun. There was about 4-5 " of new snow in the last week and the trails have been groomed. Word is there's a firm base underneath. Se you there. There's an all you can eat breakfast at the Willow School tomorrow before the race for last minute carbo loading.

    Results soon

Wow, great turnout, we had something like 26 people show up. Here's a couple pics from the race that Julia took . It was foggy at the start turning to sunshine later in the afternoon. Huge thanks to all who showed, thanks to the volunteers that made this possible, the Willow Winter Carnival folks, Bill and Kathi for the snowmachine support, hope everyone had fun. Dot is putting together the results and we should have them posted soon.

Wow, is right. We had 26 riders - 12 racers and 14 touring.

Congratulations to Jeff Gimbel for winning the men's race in am amazing 2:45:04 and Kristen Wolf for winning the women's race in 3:09:51. Three of the first five racers finishing were women. Complete results are on www.tinyurl.com/vamoose25
(If I misspell anyone's name, please let me know. Sometimes it's challenging reading handwriting.)

I've also updated the VMBaH Cup results (as of Feb 2009): www.tinyurl.com/vmbahraces
Mark Gronewald moved into the men's lead and there's a 4-way tie for 2nd. Julie Berberich moved into first place in a hotly contested women's race.

It was great to see so many riders out on such a great day. While it started foggy, it cleared off for some spectacular views. We hope to have some more photos up when we have a chance to catch up with ourselves.

Thanks to Willow Winter Carnival for having us back. Special thanks to Mark Gronewald and Bill Merchant for marking and sweeping the course. That didn't look like a whole lot of fun riding in the sled. Thanks to Denise Caldwell for helping with registration and start / finish.

This is a great trace to come race, tour, volunteer, or spectate. While our race is going on, some of the dog races (lead dog and stampede races where the idea is to stop team under the finish and grab some money hanging overhead) are also going on, so the finish line gets pretty busy with canines and bikes, although usually spaced a bit.

    Thanks for coming!!

    Few more Pics

Here's a few more pictures. Great fun riding the trail during the race on a machine trying to soften the trail a bit and make it more challenging. Would have been easier with a paddle track!!!!

The weather gods smiled upon us yesterday, just checked the Willow temps, -20 at the airport, probably colder then that down on the lakes and swamps. Good shots, Bill. Thanks again for the snowmachine support, couldn't have done it without you.

MARK YOUR CALANDARS: The third annual MOOSE DREWL 18 mile xc race is Sunday, March 8 with a barbecue party to follow. We still need more race volunteers to pull this off: timers, photographers, course officials, wait staff, course markers and sweepers w/ snowmachine please pm me if you'd like to join the team and you get free admission to a future race as part of the deal.

Glad everybody had fun. I submitted the results to ADN sports Sunday night, but they seem to have gotten skiing and mountain biking confused. geez. I said mountain biking in both the subject line and the text. I just sent in correction. It's at bottom of this article.
