    Valley Winter Races

The Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers are holding three events this winter. Mark your calendars.

    Mountain Bike Snow Slalom
    Saturday January 12, 2008
Location: Mile 11 Palmer Fishhook Rd at the Borough Recreation Area across the road from the Government Peak Campground at Hatcher Pass
Time: Check in 11:30 Am, Race starts at noon.

Race the clock on a groomed downhill course with bamboo gates. Combined best two times of three runs count for your ranking. Free. There'll also be snowshoe and XC ski demos, sledding, warming fires, and hot chocolate as part of the Mat-Su Borough Winter Trails Day. XC ride at the Moose Meadows trail system afterward.

    XC Winter Race
Last Saturday in January, Start time TBA (11ish)
Location: Start and finish at the Willow Community Center in Willow.

This 25 mile race is in conjunction with the Willow Winter Carnival and will wind on groomed trails from Willow to the Big Su, then downriver several miles and back on the Corral Hill Trail. This will be a great warm-up for the Su 50 and 100 and Alska UltraSport races later in February. Entry fee will be around $20. Further details will be provided as race time approaches. Check out the attached map, there's a huge trail system out there if anyone is looking for a good place to ride and train. Most of the trails are groomed on a weekly basis.

And we'll be doing our second annual Moose Drewl XC race at the Moose Meadows trail system in conjunction with Frigid Bits sometime in early march. Right, Rio??? New this year: We have a groomer that tows behind a snowmachine that shaves, spreads, and rolls a singletrack width bike trail in the snow and we'll be grooming some of the Moose Meadows Trails specifically for bikes.

We are also working on logistics for a 12 mile XC race this August on a killer loop course from Crevasse Moraine through the University fields to Keplar Bradley and return that will be known as the Mooseberry Stampede. Stay tuned.

Here's a map of the Willow Trails, hope it turns out, I had to shrink it a bunch. Check out our web site for the latest:

Those look like some really cool races and rides but it's too bad they are on the same day as the January Frigid Bits rides. Had a great time at the ride last winter, may have to do double duty if possible.

That is actually no accident. Kidding, kidding. Well, the Willow Winter Carnival lasts for 9 days so we might be able to change the Willow race to the first Saturday in February. Anything else scheduled for then? The slalom race is pretty much set in stone though (it's Borough Trail Day). And the Moose Drewl is in conjunction w/ the Frigid Bits races so shouldn't be a conflict there. Glad you liked the Moose Drewl, we had a great turnout last year considering it was the first one and all. Work with me here.

Ok, here's what we came up with, to avoid a conflict with Frigid Bits, we made the new schedule changes below and added some new information.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers are holding three events this winter. Mark your calendars and tune up your bikes.

    1. Mountain Bike Snow Slalom
    Saturday January 12, 2008
Location: Mile 11 Palmer Fishhook Rd at the Borough Recreation Area across the road from the Government Peak Campground at Hatcher Pass.
Sponsored by Wildfire Designs Bicycles and Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers.

    2. VMBaH VaMoose25 Winter XC Race.
New Date: Sunday, February 3, 11 am start, registration starts at 9:30 am.
Location: Start and finish at the Willow Community Center in Willow.
Entry fee: $20 to benefit Willow Winter Carnival and the VMBaH trail building fund.

This 25 mile race is in conjunction with the Willow Winter Carnival and will wind on groomed trails from Willow to the Big Su near Deshka Landing, then downriver and back on the Corral Hill or Rolly Creek Trail. This will be a great warm-up for the Su 50 and 100 and Alaska UltraSport races later in February. The course will be a smorgasbord of wooded hill counrty, swamps, and hopefully frozen rivers Check out the attached map, there's a huge trail system out there if anyone is looking for a good place to ride and train. Most of the trails are groomed on a weekly basis. We're working with Travis Hallifax who's a local out there and past bicycle division winner of the Susitna 100 to come up with a really great course.

    3. And we'll be doing our second annual Moose Drewl XC race at the Moose Meadows trail system in conjunction with Frigid Bits sometime in early march. Right, Rio??? New this year: we have a groomer that tows behind a snowmachine that shaves, spreads, and rolls a singletrack width bike trail in the snow complete with tire tracks and we'll be grooming some of the Moose Meadows Trails specifically for bikes.

    4. We are also working on logistics for a 12 mile XC race this August on a killer loop course from Crevasse Moraine through the University fields to Kepler Bradley and return that will be known as the Mooseberry Stampede. Stay tuned.
