Mooseberry Mesa Trail Work Day June 2

Thanks to a recent grant from the Mat-Su Borough Bed tax fund and an anonymous benefactor, Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers are now armed to the teeth with 25 pulaskis, 13 brand new McCleod trail tools, 2 BOB bike trailers, a soon to be purchased 5X10 enclosed cargo trailer, two mapping GPS's, a computer with mapping software, and other trail goodies we have been coveting for some time now. The only problem is that the tools did not come with attached operators so we are asking/begging for your assistance building a brand spanking new 3/4 mile singletrack loop of the already fabulous Mooseberry Mesa Trail in Crevasse Moraine Park near Palmer. We have the trail all scouted and flagged and work has already begun but we need some serious troop strength to get this project done. So come on and join us this Saturday, June 2 for this National Trails Day event. We'll be meeting at the CrevMo parking lot at the end of Loma Prieta Dr off the Palmer Wasilla Highway just west of Palmer at 10 am. Tools will be provided but you'll still need to bring drinking water, a lunch, boots, bug dope, and gloves. We plan on working until around 4 pm. We'll be giving away free schwag in the form of water bottles, stickers, t shirts, Clif Bars, etc and anyone who completes 8 hours of trail work gets a free annual parking pass good at all Mat-Su Borough parks.

Also submit your contribution to the "Name That Trail" competition. The chosen winner will have their appointed name festooned upon a trail sign for posterity for generations to come or until the borough landfill swallows the trail, whichever comes first. Entries so far are: "Moose Poop Loop" and "Poison Skeeter". You can submit your entry here on this forum or at the work day and we will be voting on the results.

Anyway, come on out and join us for a fun-filled day of cutting, hacking, dirt-flinging, grunting, cussing, sweating, and swatting because we at VMBaH know how to have a good time.

Coming soon to a trail near you.

We just received our new 5 X 10 Haulmark trailer/ rolling tool cache. She's a beauty, shiny red with lots of chrome. I've been installing tool racks and a work bench. We still need to put on some flashy Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers Trail Crew decals but it is in operational form now. Come and check it out at the trail work day.

    We kicked butt,

Thanks to the 22 volunteers who showed up and cleaned out our tool cache, we got a whole lot of new trail put in at Mooseberry. Even though the whole loop is not yet completed, please get out there and ride what we got so we can get it compacted. To get there, take the first right 300 yards or so past the "Y" junction on Mooseberry Mesa and proceed down the new trail to the bottom of the hill. There are some great banked turns and slalom sections that are close to being finished, the tread is roughed in and very ridable the whole way down, then turn around and climb back out the way you came in when you get to the end of the ~1/2 mile section we worked. Enjoy! Many thanks to all the workers that showed, the Mat-Su Borough for the tool grant, REI, American Hiking Society, and Clif Bar (among others) for sponsorship. We had a very successful day and there is some great new trail to show for our efforts. We'll keep you posted for the next work day out there, hopefully soon.
