    Knik Glacier-- ready?

    Greetings,
Given the strange weather this year, how long until we can safely bike to the glacier? Anybody been exploring up there yet?

107 views and not a single comment. Did the glacier melt? Do people in Alaska still ride bikes?

Curly, there is more beta on facebook than MTBR. Check out the Anchorage Fat Bike page:

I went that way yesterday. Started at the Hunter creek bridge.
Our first time and on 3" tires and we turned around a few miles short of the glacier.
If it had been a tad warmer we would have made it. We did cross paths with others who did.

It's times like this I wish I had facebook. But then I remember that adults act like children on FB. I don't care to be a part of that silliness even if I don't get a group ride to the glacier.

I went via Jim Creek the weekend before last, I made it to within about a half mile of the moraine, but the trail had totally fallen apart and it would have taken me too long to get to the moraine or glacier, vs. coming back at a reasonable time. The trails have only been getting better though so it's likely not a problem anymore, unless wind drifts snow or some similar event. It's fairly dynamic, but more and more people are making the trip every day from both trailhead areas. Lots of information on the Anchorage fatbike page about the correct trailheads/where to park.

Thanks Jayem, that's all I needed. I will give it a try this weekend.
