    Knik Glacier fun fest

I've been wanting to do this ride for years, taunted by wildfire and Bill M's posts here.
So with a mission ot reach Lake George we set off armed with crampons ice tools, ice axes, ropes, nordic ice skates and various other implements...

We Started at the Huner Creek Bridge and connected the gravel bars and ice. In the cool morning temps everything was nice hardpacked and crunchy.

After some backtracking to cross the river we made it to the glacier, and the studded tire playground that makes up the frozen termial lake:

Wanting to head up the gorge we traded bikes for crampons and started up the ice. Turns out that the gorge really dosent exist right now, the glacier is surged smack against the wall that makes up the west side of the gorge. This made for some interesting and fun travel.

Tony played gunea pig and decided to find the week ice for the rest of us. Here is the hole he fell into waist deep... Luckly he had drybags with dry clothing for this contigency...

We bagged it after that and turned around... then the sun came out..

    hell yeah..

heading back out was much slower since the sand and gravel had thawed. back to signs of spring.

    it was over the top.

    I second that.

A bunch of great pics, but that one is really compelling. Great shot.

Sometimes it's hard to comprehend that places like that still exist.... as I get ready for my hr long drive home in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Thanks for the passion hit and reminder.
