To post pics? I'm too lazy to find the new way . Can someone tell me? Devils pass was money today. Just short of pass proper

Climbing up the hillside STA trails, too hot even for the moose today. This one picked a spot in the shade to cool off. Heading up Queen Bee...what a scorcher!

Saw a crew chilling at Turnagain House that looked like they went up and over PL today. Was that your crew?

I used to live in Fairbanks (Ft wainwright). And we used to ride birch hill all the time. The cross country trails and the downhill.

I loved Alaska. That was 16 years ago

    Upper Russian Lakes

Had been watching the weather for the previous week and last Saturday or Sunday looked to be a great opportunity to ride Upper Russian Lakes, we chose Sunday. Parked at the top of Snug Harbor Road and ended up a the campground. Conditions were excellent, near sublime with temps at or just below freezing, no wind and a skiff of snow on a firm, frozen tread.

Rolled by the lower lake just before sunset. Alpenglow on the hills reflected in a near tranquil lake.

Haha. That picture reminds me of the time I tried skijoring. A friend had a semi trained dog so off I went on the trails around kramers farm - at least that's what I think it was called in Fairbanks

    I ate so much snow!

California Creek/Beaver Pond trail in Girdwood yesterday. Gripstuds are sweet!

Not exactly a picture, and not exactly a fatbike, from the last few days:

    Archangel Road

Took a friend of mine for his first time ever riding a fat bike.

It was quick and convenient but still so pretty and fun. We took turns riding my box store brand fatbike and my brand new Fatboy Comp and he gained an appreciation for the Fatboy, and fatbiking altogether!

It's so nice to be riding in the daylight!

    (I'm the fat one.)

    Upper Russian Lakes Trail

Upper Russian Lakes trail on 6/10/16. There is section where run off has turned the trail into a creek, otherwise, the trail is in great condition for this time of the year. Plenty of bear scat scat and a couple old prints.

Oh there's bears alright. Saw one on our ride on Saturday there, but 4 the week before on the same trail.

That guy with the splaining to do was the subject of a post on the anchorage fatbike Facebook page. Guess he bombed through a couple of elderly ladies on a hike.

Guy was not in our group, but I might have gotten a picture of the ladies. I remember two groups of hikers when we were coming down Middle Fork, one had a few dogs, the other were some older ladies, seemed nice to us, but then again when I'm leading a group, I always give the hikers/uphill riders the benefit of the doubt and stop. I don't try to ride around like a jacka$$.

Nope, just a picture of a male hiker, not sure what part of the trail. I know I had a few with a dog, but I think we may have just briefly talked to the older ladies, that was down near the Wolverine Bowl cutoff now that I remember. They were about to start and so were we, so we announced and asked to go first. They were nice to us.

Wait, found the one I was thinking about. This was maybe 1/2 to 2/3rds of the way down Middle Fork. The two older ladies I was thinking of were at Wolverine Bowl like I said, but I think I shut off the camera by then. Daily Alaska mtb picture thread-g0094219s.jpg

And there's an Anchorage Fatbike Facebook page? Wow...

And I got many pictures of the guy that blew by the hikers. I would catch up him waiting for his GF and then I'd wait for my group when they took off.

Where exactly was this ride or is this? I'm new here to Anchorage and have been riding studded tires on my mtb until my Fatback on order shows up. We were out at Portage this weekend. Drove a few side roads and walked the lake. Riding around the lake is something I want to do soon as the bike arrives. We also stopped at Bird Creek (?) campground...signs there said there's a 13 mile trail along the coast I plan to ride as well.

Thanks for any insight or help. Thanks.

It's a short ride, but it was very adventurous because we couldn't see more than a few hundred feet until we got to the glacier, which was mostly in the clear. Only 3 miles one way if you go direct. Start at the parking lot at the lake where the stairs are and go straight back until you see the glacier. With our cold weather, the ice should be good. If we get a bunch of warmer weather, then I'd look around for some reports, but at this point it's solid and all sorts of people are riding out, skiing out, walking out there. A studded MTB will make it right now because most of the snow has been scoured off.

You can't ride the bird to gird coastal trail right now because of the avalanche closure. It's in multiple avalanche paths. Plenty of trails here in Anchorage though! Check trailforks or mtbproject.com for a few insights, also the cycling routes function on google maps and there are some maps for the STA trails in Kincaid and Hilltop, just search for them (and remember to stay off of ski-only trails).

This one started at 6, ended up maybe in low teens. I was cold because I prepared for 31 degrees, which might have been a weather station in a pass or something (inversion). So I was a bit cold due to not having quite the right outer gear. Usually most of our rides are in the 20s or teens, sometimes zero and a bit into the negatives. No problem with the right gear and usually takes less clothing than most people realize, because you need breathability and your core generates a lot of heat. You dress like an XC skier, not a DH skier.
