    Alaska Ultrasport

Here's some pictures from the start of the race on Saturday. I rode out to the Little Su after the start and the trail was nice and firm so they were making good time.

    Mc

    Thanks for the pics.

It looks like Mike is far in the lead. Can anyone familiar with the course comment on his pace (for breaking Stamstad's record?)

The live coverage indicates he's "flying" but I don't have an understanding of the course to know how slow/difficult portions are.

    "Flying" means

that he's is able to ride his bike more than push it. It also means that he slept for 5 1/2 hours over the course of 3 days 6 hours, taking minimal time for rest and food at checkpoints. We do believe that he beat Stamstad's record by a scant 2 hours, 15 minutes. This is, however, unofficial news.

    New question here.

Has anybody heard how the race is going? The race website seems to be down with technical problems. How are Carl, Alan, Peter, and the rest of the people going to Nome doing? Here's some more pictures from the race start a week ago.

    race

Alan and Carl Left McGrath on thursday, not even taking a day layover. Both of them pushed really hard from the start setting a blistering pace for starting to nome!
Peter should be back in anchorage now, he bagged the trip to Nome.
I have over 100 photos to download on my digital so check back monday for some photos of the course.
    It was quite an experience.

    Website unavailable

on Saturday for some reason for some viewing folks. Curious as to whether those who couldn't view it are on MTA. One other viewer reported not being able to access the site. He says it is working again, thank goodness.

There were some sorting errors and repeats for arrival times in Nikolai which have been corrected. Also, we are researching obvious holes in data, trying to nail down details from the trail is a challenge!

I am with MTA so maybe that was the problem, but was able to log on last night. Thanks for all the effort to keep the website updated, must be a huge job! Looking forward to seeing the pics from Bearbait and hearing the epic tales of misery, suffering, and humiliation! Congratulations to all the racers.
