Airborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎

We've had our Griffin now for about 2 years, it was purchased in the fall for my 10 year old, who was just under 4' 10" but growing fast. Much to mom's dismay I ordered one from up Airborne, and out was here in a couple days. Miles came home from school with a big box on the porch and wondering why I needed yet another bike.... little later when we were assembling it he figured out what was up. The bike was too big for him, I already knew that was the deal, so I chopped the bars down, the seatpost and added some Bonty XR3 27.5 x 2.25 tires, and away he went for 3 months until he could touch with the plus tires. Now he's 12... 5' 4" and we've been tweaking it ever since... more to comeAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_200256_001.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_200319.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_200354.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_200417.jpg

As he's grown into the Griffin we've upgraded some stuff. Brakes were a must once he got moving, even after bleeding the Hayes were realty inconsistent for us, so I swapped them with some shimano XT's since they are the gold standard IMHO. As he grew we changed the stack on the stem, then ultimately into some 25mm risers, with a 50mm stem, great change! The 80mm and the bars that wee there were 1/2 XC 1/2 something else and not good at much. Removed the 20mm spacers on the forks with the service, changed the seat tube and played with different tires, the Vee's are not bad... but when dad borrows the bike, they just don't have the grip I want... so Schwalabe tires mostly for the 27.5 +Airborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_151748.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_151650.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_151604.jpg it's a really great all around trail bike now. Not quite as much fun as my Stache 9, but overall just as fast on the local trails. Still have to build a new set of 40 ID rims to match a set of new DT350 28 hole hubs I have.

But of course, what about the 29+? Here you go 40mm rims with 3.0 Chupacabra and 3.0 WTB Ranger rear on some Easton rims I built to replace the Mulefut 50's on my Stache 9. Clearance in the rear is plenty, front arch is too tight to ride safely with the Chupa or Ranger (clears arch around 1/2") but golden with the Nobby Nic 2.8 29+ and other 2.8 tires Airborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_152610.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_152620.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_152642.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_152615.jpgAirborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20170921_152652.jpg

Nice work! I was wondering if 29+ wheels would fit in there. Keep the updates coming!

Been meaning to get on with these..... I fought with the decision of XM481 30mm vs the XM 551 40mm .....
So I split the difference. Airborne Griffin Mods (or the offical Griffin 29+ thread) 😎-resized_20171029_202034.jpg
