142+ roval straight pull 360 hub in 135 frame with 135 end caps

    Hi Guys,

I know this has been done to death probably and Roval Joe said it might not work but......

I have sourced a lovely set of Roval traverse 29mm wheels in like new condition but unfortunately they are not 142 as advertised but 142 plus.

The store says I can return them but they are really nice so I would love to keep them.

Anyway if I fit new 135 end caps this will create an extra 2mm on the drive side which should then push the frame out 1mm at either side.

    Will this matter?

Surely this will not stress it much ?

The drive should be ok as the frame is moving out to clear the cassette and the relationship with the frame is therefore the same.

The chain should accommodate the change in chain line as the 142 plus has a different line and I should be able to adjust the rear much if required.

My worry is the disc and c aliper alignment.

The difference to the hub is on the drive side but my brain says that the frame deflection will be on both stays resulting in a 1mm offset on the disc side ans a very minute angle change.

    Will this matter?

As an engineer I'm pretty sure the system should be tolerant enough to accommodate this 1 mm

    1. Fixed the original post to say 1mm on disc side.
    2. I found this doc from Specialized, not sure if you've seen it:

I'm not convinced it'll work well either. Wrong endcaps, on wrong width hubs in a wrong spaced frame. Sounds like an alignment headache and the frame is constantly being loaded with a lateral stress it wasn't designed to take.

I'm not an engineer but it just seems all sorts of wrong.

It works fine. It will measure around 137mm with the standard 135mm end caps. Chainline and rotor location will be the same as a 135mm hub. I ran the same hub on my gravel bike all year, with standard 142x12 end caps it measured 144x12.

And I actually have that exact hub (several of them, thanks @Black Squirrel!) with that exact setup. I'm using it in a pugsley and a Jones plus. I have zero issues with any alignment, all works perfectly

    Thanks For the replies guys.

Jason was your hub on a 135 QR or 142 frame?

    I guess I'll give it a go.

Both frames are 135, but with the qr end caps on those hubs it does make the hub 137. Also my frames are steel, but it is only 2mm so I personally would do it on any frame material

That's my gut feel as well.
