    11 or 12? Help!

Ok guys, my dilemma. Do I need the extra gear? I mean if I get a 46 XT cassette, or even a 50 SRAM? Also I bought the XT8100 cranks. Can I use that with an 11sp chain? Will I have to worry about chain drop? Should I just do 12, and be there already? Thanks for reading, and answering!

You could look at the 11-51 11sp cassette Shimano released. $89 in M5100. You need a derailleur with that capacity SLX 7100($75) or Deore 5100($45). A N-W chainring and HG or HG+ chain.

Why would you get an amp that goes to 11 when you could have an amp that goes to 12?

Don't worry about chain drop until and unless it happens, then get a chain guide.

Of course, this is based on not knowing anything about what, where or how you ride....but I'm not sure that really matters anyway, TBH. I'd just get the 12 speed.

I played with 11 for a while, ended up with 12 and now I hate riding he 11. Huge difference in shifter tension, many 11s require more pressure, 12's shift like butter

I appreciate the CS 5100 cassette info! If I go 12, I have a ‘normal’ Shimano splined hub. I’d like to stay XT. Is there an issue using a SRAM or Sunrace cassette? Would the XT chain pair up with the previously mentioned brands? Thanks again guys!

I was looking at this recently. I bought a full xt 11 speed before the pandemic drove prices through the roof. Finally just got the frame I was waiting to build and decided to make a final 11 vs 12 check... 12 would end up costing me almost 2x the price so I stuck with 11.

However, for the CURRENT price difference, I would go 12 speed. It’s about $200 more.

As you can see by my Avatar: 11 speed. It's not an Eagle though...

The Shimano 12sp cassette will not work with the traditional Shimano hub driver. You'll need their "Microspline" driver to go to 12. I think with the Shimano cassette...you'll need to use their chain and chainring. You can run SRAM and Sunrace 12sp cassettes with the Shimano derailleur.

That’s what I was wondering, would I still be able to use the XT chain with the SRAM or Sunrace cassette? I want to use the XT derailleur as well.
