ZEN 9 name change contest, winner wins a frame!

Okay, so several months ago when we announced the Zen 9, we found out (thanks Shiggy) that the name was already being used. We had checked with the Trademark office before deciding on that name, and it was free to use, but after finding out about the other brand we made some calls and did some research. Turns out, we will have to re-name the Zen 9 (the other brand was super cool about it, we just had no idea of it being used since it wasn’t trademarked).

Well, our brains are tapped. We’ve been so busy with everything lately that we just can’t seem to wrap our minds around the task of re-naming the Zen 9 full suspension bike, so we thought we’d employee you.

The contest is simple. Name our bike and we’ll give you one of the first Zen 9’s to come off the production line later this year. It’s that easy. Or is it? Here are the complete rules:

    1. The name must be three letters long followed by a 9.
    1. <LI class=MsoNormal style="COLOR: green">the three letters can be a word (the word doesn’t have to be English, but if it isn’t, please supply the language and the definition of the word in your entry)
    2. the three letters can be an acronym (please submit the meaning of your acronym with your entry as we definitely don’t have time to figure that out)
    1. <LI class=MsoNormal style="COLOR: green">You must be 18 or older to win. <LI class=MsoNormal style="COLOR: green">Submit your entry here on this board for everybody to see (won't this be fun) AND <LI class=MsoNormal style="COLOR: green">Submit your entry to: [email protected] with the subject line FULL SUSPENSION CONTEST <LI class=MsoNormal style="COLOR: green">Your entry to us must include your name, address, date of birth, and a daytime number to contact you. <LI class=MsoNormal style="COLOR: green">Entries must be received by March 1st, 2006
    2. We will only allow THREE entries per person, so you better come up with some creative names (this will keep people who can write a program that can instantly print out the trillion+ three letter combinations using all the letters of the english alphabet from being able to win the easy way)

The winner will be announced by March 20th, 2006. In the event that there are two people with the same name and/or acronym, we will give one person the front triangle of the frame and the other the rear triangle (just kidding, the winner will be the one who we received the email from first). So that’s it. A free frame for very little work. So start thinking, the time is short.

OKAY, okay. You guys are awesome. Keep them coming. And here are a few pics to help with inspiration.

    Rip9.

    as in Roll in peace
there is another rip, but this one is a little different. Acronym.

Rex9- king of the niners. He doesn't have the smoothness of the sir9 in his court, but instead overtakes his obstacles by shear brute force. It attacks straight on without faltering from his line.

Boy, can't believe this hasn't been taken yet: THE 9, as in THE bike to have, THE best 9er frame, etc. Clever acronym to follow after consumption of a few Deschutes Brewing Co. Black Butte Porters.

    Ok

The entries are in the email.

    My entries

DAS 9 - German article meaning THE 9. Acronym for Dirt Aggressive Speed. I would have tried DIE 9 (Dee) but in English it's pronounced dye.

DER 9 - German article THE 9 again. Acronym Dirt Effective Reflex.

    ZWY 9 - German number zwei 9 = 2 9.

E.Y.E. 9 You gotta see it.

F.U.R. 9 as in F-in' Ultimate Ride, but fur is also nice and smooth like the bike. Rhymes with S.I.R. 9 for a nice mental product line link.

    S.A.H. 9 Smoove As Hell.

That's all I got. FUR is my favorite.

    Hmm...

Considering all the good ones in english (and german, and italian...) must have been taken my only option is to go for some silly, way exotic, ones in Swedish . I sincerly hope none of them happen to mean something inappropriate in english slang that I'm not aware of .

Fet-9 (means Fat-9, slang for "bad" or "cool")
    Gör-9 (regional slang for "very"-9)
Tju-9 (phonetic construction, making it sound like 29 in swedish)

"Bikes Are Cool" and a play on "back nine" since this bike has rear suspension.

    pmv9
    Physics formula for momentum
    Momentum = mass * velocity
In physics, the symbol for the quantity momentum is the small case "p"; thus, the above equation can be rewritten as
    p = m * v
Refers to the idea that the 29er movement, Niner Bikes (the company), and someone riding this bike is "on the move" and hard to stop.

Even better when you consider that the unabbreviated equation is Energy = Mass * Speed of Light, squared

Mass times the speed of light, squared. A bit over the top, but E=Mc2 stickers and stem caps would be cool in a slashdot sort of way.

One could do much worse. Ask somebody from Poland what SRAM means.

SOL 9. pronounced Soul 9, but spelled with a - above the O so that it implies a long O sound. Invokes the idea of soul, solitude, and an obvious anacronym...

    Submitted for your consideration:

    1) SUS 9

    - Literal due to the fact that it's a full-suspension bike and the only one in your showroom. Also more of an "insider" term; avid off-road enthusiasts would know immediately what that's in reference to, makes them feel part of an elite group. (Don't think you'd here Pacific frame owners asking others if there frame is "full sus")

    2) MOD 9

    - Sounds good alone; alternately could be acronym for
    "Method of Discovery"

    3) DOP 9

    - Flows very well; alternately could be acronym for "Dual On Purpose"

Maybe so... I didn't really have time to skim the 158 replies that existed...

But, because you have seen all four TAO9's (and I haven't), is my use of TAO9 unique in its use of the acronym? If not, no worries... great minds think alike.

    Thanks for the info,

    Acronyms not Words...

    Niner Bikes,

I've read your rules, and I submitted 3 'words' as contest submittals. But I think limiting it to three is not necessary especially with acronyms. Because even though the same letters may be used, the words may be different. E.g., E.M.D. (eat my dust), that is not the same as (early morning dump). Both of them could have been suggested, but the 'eat my dust' submission would have been the winner.

As another example, ABC 9 (Another Bike Contest) is a different submission than ABC 9 (Amy's Butt Crack) even though the letter's are same, you would probably pick the name ABC (Another Bike Contest) for the acronym instead of ABC (Amy's Butt Crack).

Therefore, I've decided to submit some more suggestions... I don't think I'm over stepping my bounds, just having some more fun.

So here are my acronym submissions. If you pick one, and you still think I broke the 'rules' we'll let MTBR sort it out. Odds are none of these are winners...

    sbb 9 (smooth as a baby's bottom)
    dtt 9 (dishing the dirt)
bnt 9 (blaze a new trail)
dhp 9 (dropped like a hot potato)
    ibd 9 (I'll be damned)
    otd 9 (on the double)
    oom 9 (orders of magnitude)
    nss 9 (niner stable suspension)
    nss 9 (no sh*t sherlock)
this is what I want to say when someone ask's me, "Is that a niner?" ...

Your goal is to get the best name, right?
We don't need more to be thankful for; we just need to be more thankful.
